Your nose picks up the scent of hay, it's subtle but you can tell. Especially if you have allergies. When you place your ear on the door you can hear something large moving around and rustling the hay before it falls silent.
Then you hear a thump on the door.. and another.. a moment passes till you hear a third.
As you're brain tries to figure out what is going on you can hear some shuffling that seems to come closer. You can hear some scratching and creaking of the door before it moves away..
