(Brad Pitt Voice) What's in the box?
Ravers' Gold
“I knew we should never have opened that box,” Kurt said, looking down at the gun on the floor, and several gold coins scattered beside it.
Brandon bent down and picked up the weapon and the box, turning the revolver one way and then the other, the gun itself in quite good condition despite the box they’d found it in. “Relax,” he said, as he marveled at the gun. “It’s so old, I bet it’s an antique. Probably doesn’t even work.”
“I’d say Civil War era. Maybe older. Looks like a single action Colt revolver from around those times,” Kurt noted, leaning over to take a closer look. Then straightening up again, he added, “But I’d really rather not find out if it’s still good for shooting. There are way too many people around right now that might be tempted to use it.”
“Still, it’s pretty interesting, finding something like this down here,” Brandon replied, setting the gun in the box and placing the box on a nearby shelf, before bending down to gather up the coins. “And this money…looks like pure gold, but it’s not American. The writing is all in Mexican.”
“Huh, could be Spanish,” Kurt mused, tilting his head thoughtfully. “Actually, it reminds me of a story my mum told me once about Robert’s family.”
“The Ravers?” Brandon asked, standing with the coins cupped in his palm. “I guess I just assumed Robert got these at an auction or something.”
“That’s possible. I don’t think my mum even believed the story, and when she told me it seemed like she was relaying something that her sister had told her about Robert, not something she herself had been told,” Kurt admitted, frowning slightly. “It was before I was born, I guess around the time Heather's parents were engaged, and my mum was interested what sort of family her sister, Heather's mum, was marrying into. When asked, Brooke told my mum what Robert had told her, though it seemed somewhat apocryphal.”
“If this was before you were born, then why tell you?” Brandon asked, becoming increasingly curious. “And what exactly did she say?”
“Oh, I was young when she told me, but I think I must have been asking how Robert got all his money,” Kurt struggled to remember, then shrugged and carried on. “But the story goes like this. Robert’s great, great, great, great grandfather fought in the civil war, or maybe it was his great, great, great, great, great grandfather, but someone back in his family fought in the Civil War. He was in a big battle and, although they won, Robert’s ancestor and some of his company got separated from the main ****. They knew where the next rally point was, so they marched in that direction. On the way they came across a confederate soldier who had been separated from his men as well. But this man was injured, and the wound was festering, and he’d likely die if no one intervened. There was some debate among the men about what to do; some wanted to leave him, some wanted to put him out of his misery but it was Robert’s kin that convinced the others to dress the wound and set the man up with one of their horses and direct him to a nearby town.”
“That’s a cool story. Though I’m not sure I believe that the Ravers guy was the only noble one who wanted to help. Kinda makes him look a little too good, know what I mean.” Brandon laughed. “It explains why he’d have a Civil War revolver but not the coins.”
“Well, that was only one part of it. Apparently, after the war was done, these guys go back home and one night they’re just sitting in a bar when in walks the confederate soldier. They don’t even recognize him at first because he looks so healthy compared to when they last saw him. But he strides on over and thanks them for what they did. He says he wants to make it up to them and they think he’s going to buy them a drink or something. Instead, he produces a bag of coins for each one,” Kurt continued, trying to remember as many details as possible. “They’re stunned. Before they can ask any questions, the guy leaves, but they look inside the bag and apparently there were coins from every corner of the earth, enough to set them up for five lifetimes.”
“Oh wow,” Brandon awed, looking again at the gold coins. “Is that how Robert is supposed to have gotten so rich?”
“Ah, no.” Kurt laughed and shook his head. “Robert made all his money himself. Though Heather did tell me once that the money he used as start-up for his first business was inherited from his grandfather, so you know, maybe it all just ran out before it got to him.”
“I hope it’s true, but I know it’s unlikely,” Brandon chuckled as he put the coins back into the box as well. “For one, how did the guy know how to find them?”
“Not to mention, the convenience that they were all in the bar at the same time or that he just disappeared before they could ask where the money came from,” Kurt remarked, smirking. “But it is sort of romantic don’t you think? A roguish tale of a bunch of good men doing the right thing and being rewarded for it. It sounds adventurous and awe-inspiring…absolutely the kind of thing you’d tell a woman you were trying to sleep with, no?”
“Oh, man, you don’t think this is the story Robert used to get Heather’s mum to fall in love with him, do you?” Brandon asked, turning towards the exit. “Would that even work?”
“Dunno. Maybe I’ll have to try it sometime and see for myself. Though it might be pretty potent,” Kurt moved back out onto the landing before the decking, Brandon following just behind. “Brooke and Robert were very much in love before they separated, and in Heather’s words, her mum became a bitch.”
“I’m not sure I trust Heather where her mum is concerned,” Brandon confessed, watching Kurt lock the storage room again. “I mean, she’s an honest girl but she’s definitely biased towards her dad. Like Madison and I biased.”
“What?” Kurt whipped his head around and looked hard at Brandon as the quarterback clamped his hand over his mouth.
“Shit, I forgot,” Brandon squeezed his eyes shut in his regret. “None of you know about that yet.”
“Heather…and Robert…her own father?” Kurt swallowed hard as his brained tried to ratify the idea of his cousin actually fucking his uncle. Roleplay was one thing, but Heather had really gone through with it. That was perverse, even for Kurt. What was he supposed to do though? Condemn it, even though he felt partially responsible for encouraging it?
“I don’t think it’s been going on very long, if that helps…though why would it, but listen, she seems happy,” Brandon panicked, scrambling to put the cat back in the bag. “Except for the fact that Hannah’s blackmailing us with a video of Heather sucking her dad’s cock so that we’ll leave Lisa to the fate of the judicial system. Heather’s not happy about her relationship with her dad being exposed.”
“It’s just so weird. Like my whole life I’ve just known them as my uncle and cousin, father and daughter. When I picture them, that’s all I see,” Kurt said, trying to collect his thoughts as they walked up the steps to the decking. “I’ve seen Heather naked, so I can see that but then I tried to put her with Robert and my brain just freezes. It’s just incompatible. I can’t even imagine what a video of those two would look like.”
“Well, I didn’t see it, only Heather and Ashley, and Ashley was quite disgusted. But I did hear some of it, and it sounds like he’s fairly hung,” Brandon remembered, following Kurt through the glass doors. “She sounded like she was really sucking that bad boy.”
“Thanks. How I can’t imagine my Uncle without a horse cock,” Kurt sighed, walking through the kitchen. “Fantastic.”
They entered the living room, making their way through towards the hall, leading down to the master bedroom where Victoria and Madison would be so that they could set up the air mattress, but just as they were walking through, Gavin and Chloe entered from outside, their faces flush and smiling. They blushed deeper, seeing Kurt and Brandon, and sheepishly closed the outside door.
“Hey,” Kurt greeted the pair. “Did you get the car clean?”
“What?” Chloe stared at Kurt, confused for a moment, then blinking said, “Oh, oh yeah, yeah, no, it’s worse than I thought. Got it all over the back of the passenger seat and everything.”
“Fuck,” Kurt said, confused himself why Chloe was now giggling. “What did you guys do with that soda?”
Saving Chloe from answering, Heather strode through the living room, hastily walking towards her room, not even stopping as she told the others, “Zack and Ashley will explain everything.”
“Hey, hey, wait up,” Kurt insisted, storming after her, air mattress still under arm. “I’ve got a bone to pick with you.”
As they disappeared down the hall and into Heather’s room, Brandon turned back to Gavin and Chloe, but Chloe was quick to excuse herself too, waddling off towards the bathroom. Brandon watched her go and asked, “is Chloe alright?”
“Uh, what?” Gavin stammered. “What do you mean?”
“She’s walking kinda funny,” Brandon explained, looking to Gavin again. “Looks like she might have hurt herself.”
“Um, must be a cramp,” Gavin glanced around, eager to change the subject. “Where is everyone? I thought they’d be debriefing us on what happened with Hannah.”
“They will, but they needed to talk to Zack first because something happened that kind of concerns him,” Brandon told him, learning from his mistake with Kurt and keeping his mouth firmly clamped on what that entailed. “Actually, I did want to ask you something too.”
“Oh, oh really?” Gavin asked, hoping that it wasn’t another question about Chloe. “W-what about?”
“You were at the club with my sister,” Brandon said, building to his actual question. “Did you happen to see her with anyone?”
Gavin’s face went pale. His first thought was that Brandon knew about Madison propositioning him in the kitchen. And Gavin saw what Brandon had done to Zack after he’d caught him cheating with Ashley. How much worse would it be for him, being involved with his sister and lover? Of course, they weren’t really involved, so it shouldn’t matter. Gavin had even rejected her, so Brandon should be happy. And yet, even telling the intimidating football player the truth was difficult.
Then again, if Brandon knew about that incident, wouldn’t he just come out and ask about it? Why ask about Madison at the club? As Gavin breathed and thought about what Brandon was really asking, he suddenly felt much safer.
“I did see her at the start and at the end, but that’s about it,” Gavin admitted, and then indicting in the direction where Chloe had just left. “I was in the car most of the night with Chloe. We just decided the club scene wasn’t really for us, you know.”
“Ok, I see,” Brandon watched Gavin carefully, scanning his face. He could tell the other teen was hiding something, but he wasn’t sure it had anything to do with Madison. “Did she mention anything she wanted to do there? Anyone she wanted to meet, or anything like that?”
“Hm, nothing specific,” Gavin elaborated, thinking back to the car trip to the club. “She did say she wanted to find a guy, but she didn’t say why,” and then adding, as he thought back to the meeting in the kitchen, “probably trying to make you jealous, if I had to guess.”
That caught Brandon off guard, since he wasn’t aware that Gavin knew he and his sister were intimately linked, but it seemed word had gotten out further than he’d realized. Maybe Madison was going around telling people to try and normalize the relationship…but then why try to also make him jealous at the same time? Had Madison fucked another man, knowing Brandon would be able to feel her getting off through their twin connection?
“Thanks,” Brandon slapped Gavin on the shoulder as he reluctantly resigned himself to his last option. “I guess I’ll have to ask Zack if he knows anything.”
