Lore!
Races of Idruinn
Humans
Humans are the quintessential example of the average race. They typically do not excel in any particular region of life, be that magic, war, creation, or anything else. They make up for this, however, with sheer numbers and an indomitable spirit. Humankind makes up the majority of the sentient inhabitants of Idruinn, and their vast empires span the many continents. Humans live for a maximum of about 80 years, but the lifespan of many, especially the poor, is significantly smaller.
Elves
Elves are far more magically inclined than humans, preferring to exist in small villages or towns, rather than vast empires. Although there is a large variation in different types of Elves, all originate from a species called the Elendyr. The Elendyr are most similar to High Elves, but each subspecies shares many traits with their ancestors. There are several types of elves, but most are either High, Wood, or sometimes Dark. They live for upwards of 800 to 1000 years, and their close knit communities mean most elves survive to these ages. An elf is considered mature at 50.
Wood Elves
Wood Elves, also called Orlyth, are the most common type of elves, making up about 40% of all Elvenkind. They have a natural affinity for nature and some nature-based magic. Wood Elves split from the general type of elvenkind when a group of Elves, who were particularly skilled in nature magic, became a tribe of their own. This tribe eventually split into many more, and so the Orlyth were formed. Laxhyr is their patron God.
High Elves
High Elves, also called Seldyrlyth, are the second most common type of elves, making up about 30% of all Elvenkind. They have a natural affinity for magic, making them effective spellcasters. Seldyrlyth are the direct descendents of the Elendyr, sharing their affinity for magic, as well as a similar physical appearance. Most High Elves worship Seldyr, but he is too neutral to care.
Dark Elves
Dark Elves, also called Navaelyth, are the third most common type of elves, making up about 20% of all Elvenkind. They do not share a natural affinity for nature or magic, like the Wood and High counterparts, instead preferring physical interactions and warfare. All Dark Elves descend from the corrupted variants of the other Elven Species. Although most Navaelyth come from High Elf corruption, some are descended instead from Wood Elves. The corruption was a powerful magical event performed by the goddesses Iraura and Ibriss, whose combined Magic turned the Elves’ skin to coal and hair to ash, set fire to their souls, and burned their conscience to embers. Although most Dark Elves are not evil, a stigma formed against them, which is regularly fortified by a few truly irredeemable Navaelyth.
Dwarves
Aside from some rare exceptions, most dwarves are either Mountainous or Hill Dwarves. The two are very similar, but Mountain Dwarves are more skilled with metallurgy and smithing, but Hill Dwarves are better with general craftsmanship. Both Dwarven races share a belief that it is wrong to cut their hair, due to the fact that all bodily features are a gift from the Gods.
Mountain Dwarves
Mountain Dwarves, also called Hjodlikrar, are the taller of the two types of Dwarves, standing at about 3.5 feet. Their skin ranges from a dark grey to a soft earth tone, and they are skilled smiths. Over the years, the Hjodlikrar grew stronger and slightly shorter than their Hill Dwarf counterparts due to the constant mining and masonry they performed.
Hill Dwarves
Hill Dwarves, also called Zannazrar, stand at about 4 feet tall, and their skin colour is typically a soft brown or pale pink, making them more similar in appearance to Humans than a Mountain Dwarf would be. Zannazrar are excellent craftsmen, just as the Hjodlikrar are, but unlike their blacksmith and mason cousins, the Hill Dwarves favour surface materials, such as wood, farming resources, and much more. Hence Zannazrar are skilled carpenters, leatherworkers, and are often masters of other craft-based professions.
Gnomes
Gnomes are inventive and curious beings, celebrated for their sharp intellect and magical prowess. Standing about three to four feet tall, they are characterised by their vibrant personalities and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Gnomes often dwell in intricate burrows or bustling workshops, where they create wondrous inventions and delve into arcane mysteries. Their mischievous nature and boundless energy make them delightful companions and formidable allies.
Halflings
Halflings are a cheerful and resourceful race, known for their love of comfort, good food, and quiet countryside life. Standing about three feet tall, they are nimble and quick, with an innate talent for stealth and a natural affinity for luck. Despite their small stature, halflings possess a courageous spirit and are fiercely loyal to their friends and family.
Giants
Giants stand, at least, at 30 feet tall when fully grown, and they reside on mountains and other isolated areas. Where Dwarves live inside the Mountains, the Giants make their homes atop the peaks. The kind of mountain a Giant lives on determines its physiology; the higher the peak the taller it is, and the temperature determines its skin colour. On snowy peaks, it will be pale, whereas in a volcano, it will be dark.
Changelings
Changelings are one of, if not the most, hated races in Idruinn. They are persecuted and discriminated against, and anyone under the suspicion of being a changeling is ostracised. This reputation stems both from the fact Changelings were created by the Lady of ****, and their ability to change themselves as they see fit, which most consider untrustworthy.
Dragonborn
Dragonborn mostly reside in the Kingdom of Munvoak, on the western shores of Draocor. They are a proud, honourable people with combat in their very blood. Their culture may seem bizarre to outsiders, but everything has its own reasoning, even if that is known just to the Dragonborns. Dragonborn scales can appear in many colours, as with true Dragons.
Dragons
Dragons were another creation of the Lady of ****, but these ones are more deserving of their bad reputation. They are huge, powerful creatures who often love to hoard treasure and resources, eating any who dare to defy them. Dragons can theoretically grow infinitely, but that depends on the resources available to feed them. Most dragons grow up to 350 feet long with a 400 foot wingspan, though some grow far larger.
Red Dragons
Red Dragons are the most powerful Dragons, and they breathe fire. They are typically the largest due to their ability to eat almost anything.
Black Dragons
Black Dragons are the most deadly of the draconic variants, and they breathe a life draining gas. This is both a weapon and a feeding method, as the life **** of their victims extends the Black Dragon’s own life.
White Dragons
White Dragons are one of two good dragon types, and they breathe ice crystals. They are the joint second biggest, sharing their size and power levels with Black Dragons. They often protect lesser species from other Dragon attacks.
Green Dragons
Green Dragons, despite being one of the weakest kinds of Dragons, are rabid and vicious. They breathe a poisonous cloud of gas and feast on the coughing forms of their victims, whether the poison has killed them or not.
Blue Dragons
Blue Dragons are the other good dragon type, and they breathe a geyser of water. They reside in the ocean and in beach caves, and are mostly neutral to humans.
