Quickly become her close friend

You’re about to go, but suddenly get the idea that you’d love to have a rich friend. The core of Mrs. Landers’ self is a duplicate of the core of your own self, though you’re almost entirely Carrie Ma in self and she is almost entirely April Landers. “You and Mr. Landers are booked for seven more nights,” you say. Damn, but you love your excellent Caroline Ma brain!

“Yes, Caroline,” she says. “Tyler is tempted to have us stay longer.” She doesn’t have to tell you that Tyler is her new husband’s name: she knows how retentive your mind is, having been you.

“Encourage him, Mrs. Landers,” you say.

“Do call me April, Caroline!”

“My friends call me Carrie,” you say. “And over the rest of your stay here, you and I are going to become very close friends.”

“I’d truly like that, Carrie,” she says, and you find yourself engulfed as April gives you a thoroughly sisterly but very enthusiastic hug.

“Tyler won’t mind?” you ask April, once you two separate.

“Carrie, Tyler’s not a snob, and I’m actually a bit lower-class than your respectable overseas-Chinese family,” she says. “He thinks I need an older sister, and you’ll be great as one!”

“Okay, April,” you say. You tell her when you’ll be on duty, and encourage her to treat you like her personal concierge, knowing that it’ll be fine with your supervisors.

“Carrie,” she says, “I literally can’t tell you how grateful I am to you!”

You give a delicious Carrie Ma giggle. It’s a genuinely funny joke to you: because she was a suit-clone of your former self and you ordered her not to tell anyone she’s ever not been April. “I guess you can’t, April!”

She gets two $100 bills from her wallet and you take them politely and gratefully. Soon you’re back at the front desk as if you hadn’t just murdered a woman and created a perfect impostor to be your friend.
