Chapter 52 by Almax Almax

And you absolutely will do your best to!

Quick as you can!

You spring out on top of the pistol, landing just short and scrambling forward the rest of the distance through the gravel until you have a good hold on it. You roll over onto your back, holding the pistol's grip with both hands and pointing it down your body towards the monster.

Still not facing you, the monster begins running away and towards Jace, kicking up a gravel dust cloud into your face as it goes. You cough through it, blinking sorely as little bits get in your eyes, and do your best to aim through the cloud despite that. When you think you have a good shot ready, even though your eyes are a bit watery now, you squeeze your finger down on the trigger.

BANG!

With the shot fired and your best efforts expended, you get to work waving away the annoying and rude dust cloud which formed around you. When your vision is unblocked, you're very disappointed to see the monster not only still moving through the battlefield, but moving just as quickly as it was before -- and nearly to the hut Jace is in. A short distance from where you rest on your behind, a chunk of grass and dirt is missing. That must be the spot where your explosive bullet landed after missing. You weren't fast enough to get to your gun in time.

But it's okay! There's no reason to get upset about it. There's still time to make things right, and beat up some monsters, so long as you don't give up just yet!

Behind you, there's a loud CLANG as Cameron connects with a hefty shielded backhand to the side of his monster's head. It stuns the monster, and knocks the startled thing down to the ground. From there it quickly regains itself and scrambles up to its feet, but from what you can see sitting just a short distance away, it clearly doesn't want to be there anymore. That notion is confirmed when it shakes its head as if there's something loose rattling around the inside, then turns and darts away back the way it came towards the bridge that Delilah's still fighting away on.

With a heavy breath, clearly quite tired, Cameron jogs over towards you and offers you a hand. You take it, and he pulls you up to your feet.

"That, uh...." He says, between panting. "Probably could've gone better for us."

You nod.

Without another word, Cameron shakes his head, and starts jogging off towards the hut where Jace is probably freaking out about the one-armed and frenzied monster attacking him. Does he have any weapons for close up, or just the crossbow? You think it's just the crossbow.

You're still determined to be of use this fight, so you load up your pepperbox pistol full of impact bullets from your pocket full of loose ones, and look over to where the other enemies are -- the bridge.

Delilah's still fighting away against the one she's been up against the whole time up there, jumping and dodging like a showing off acrobat. The other monster, the one that Cameron was just fighting, is almost to the base of the bridge -- Delilah probably won't be able to finish off the monster she's against before the other one gets there, so pretty soon it's going to be a two versus one if you can't do anything. But she also is very mean to you and you don't like her very much. Which muddies the water a bit.

You look back and forth a few times, between the hut and the bridge, to decide where you're most needed at the moment.

And also where you most want to be at the moment! Your feelings matter too, living your life by just supporting others is unsustainable.
