“Now!”

Quick and deadly

Chapter 190 by Jpyric Jpyric

You lunge forward, pushing past the guard in your way, and begin to draw power from Lilith. She seems almost eager to grant it, and as before, the world seems to slow down around you. You pull Caliburn free, the blade humming through the air as you charge towards the approaching Nullifier.

He raises his guard high to deflect your blade, but at the speed you’re moving now, his block simply leaves him open. Strength surging through your limbs, you slam an armored fist into his chest, denting the breastplate with the impact. Staggering back, he swipes at you, an easily avoidable attack, and you weave inside his reach and deliver a kick to the inside of his knee. There’s a horrific crunch as the leg bends in the wrong direction, and the man drops his sword as he falls, clutching his ruined knee.

Figuring he’s no longer a threat, you charge past. Ferra, meanwhile, has engaged two Nullifiers, her arms now the familiar blades she uses in combat. The warriors she’s facing are fast and skilled, but nowhere near enough to keep up with the blindingly fast golem. Even at the speed you’re moving, she’s little more than a blur, and soon one Nullifier falls, bleeding from a myriad of wounds. The other, more skilled than the others, desperately duels with Ferra, in a fight that can only have one ending.

There’s only one warrior left, but as you charge him you can see the device begin to glow behind him. A whine grows in pitch as you approach, and you expect it will trigger soon. Suddenly, a rock comes whistling in, hurled from an angry member of the crowd behind you. The rock pings off the armor of the Nullifier, causing no real damage.

Except that it knocks his emblem off.

The device glows brightly, and there’s a sizzling hiss as a whip of blue energy strikes the now unprotected Nullifier in the back. There’s a sickening stench of charred meat and burned hair as the smoking, armored form drops to the ground with a clatter. You speed past his corpse, as the glow slowly grows in the device again. You can see you’ll reach it before it can discharge again, however.

The pair of mages raise their hands as you close, and you see them weaving magic, either to defend themselves or to attack, but you have a different objective now. With all your enhanced strength, you bring Caliburn down on the device, as it begins to whine once again.

The device shatters, exploding with stored power. Your armor withstands the blast, though you can feel Lilith strain in your mind. The mages are not so lucky.

The explosion hurls them both backwards, with incredible force. The first slams against a low wall, collapsing to the ground limply. The other is hurled against the gates, falling down to his hands and knees. You rush over to finish incapacitating him with a kick to the head. However, Lilith gleefully gives you a surge of strength, and the kick is much stronger than you intended. You feel bones crunch, and the man twitches and goes limp, blood leaking from his nose and mouth.

A pacified enemy is still a threat. A dead enemy is not. You’re welcome.

You shake your head, and turn to see Ferra has finished her last opponent. Kaeli is rushing over as well, seemingly unbothered by the carnage you’ve wrought. “I guess you found your own way. Lucky that someone threw that rock, though.”

You nod, feeling a wave of lethargy wash over you as Lilith withdraws her energy. Suddenly out of breath, you gesture towards the door built into the gates. Ferra nods in understanding, and kicks the door open. Behind you, the guards are too busy with the small riot to stop you, as the three of you slip out of the city.
