What exactly can I control?

I slid a cold beer across the table to her. “Have a drink,” I ordered her. Grace hated beer, but she picked it up and took a swig before putting the bottle down with a look of disgust.

“Dammit, Ron, you know I hate beer.”

“But you drank it anyway,” I noted.

Grace looked at the bottle in confusion. “I did. Why did I do that?”

“Let's try this – Grace, I want you to enjoy the taste of beer. Now take another drink.”

Grace took another swig and made the same disgusted face as before. “That didn't work,” she informed me.

OK, so I couldn't command something that wasn't an action. So if I told her to fall passionately in love with me, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't happen. But I had made her stop worrying earlier, hadn't I? Maybe worry was a chemical thing? Maybe emotions weren't off limits?

“Grace I want you to feel overwhelming sorrow.”

Tears started flowing. Her usual smile disappeared. Her shoulders slumped and she looked away.

“Why are you sad, Grace?”

“I don't know,” she moaned.

“Fuck that. Stop feeling sad for now.” Instant change.

“How about horny? Grace, I want you to feel powerful sexual desire right now.”

Grace turned red in the face and started breathing faster. She squirmed in her seat but didn't say anything. Her hands seemed restless and fidgety, but remained on the table.

“Did it work?” I asked.

“No,” she said quickly.

“Grace, don't lie to me,” I ordered. “Never. Never lie to me. Did it work?”
