How do you finagle a way for Golondrina to be close to you and Fay?

Owe a GOAL to Euryale to prepare Amethystine's Tower

You go in search of someone who might be able to get Golondrina assigned a room closer to you and Fay. With Lolo taking the big step of joining you and Fay in House Minerval, it would be best if everything could be settled well to begin with.

When you joined Boarbristle Academy, House Minerval put its first-years in spartan, clammy basement cells. When Euryale took charge as Wardress at the beginning of your second year, the same time that Whiplash became Master of House, she had the old dungeon cleared out -- something about energy flow or malign influences or perhaps a first-year summoning something they couldn't dismiss. Euryale arranged for first-year dormitories to be adapted from the departing Headmistress' quarters, laboratory, and library which were withdrawn from Boarbristle's commons and absorbed into Minerval.

When you were a firstie, it was the dungeon for you. You and Fay, but you didn't really know her until second year. First year, you were intensely uncomfortable with all these scions of multiple generations of Book Witchery, and Fay was just another one of the sarcastic snobs making your life miserable. Your refuge was, at first, the library, where Miss Caldwell had been a strict keeper of the peace, and later, the Infirmary, with Miss Wormwood. Miss Wormwood. Soother. Confidante. Teacher. Lover, icy and intense. You swallow, remembering the bitter prickle on your tongue when her venom flowed in your veins.

Partway through second year, Fay told you, "You've lost your accent, Morgan. I miss my little village girl."

You'd replied, "Oh now you tell me, Fay. You were giving me such grief when I was a firstie."

"I was," Fay said, with a distant look. "I don't want to do that to anyone, anymore."

Headmistress Iris spent half her time in her library and conjuration room, and was often closeted with Elbegast, Master of Devices, Miss Caldwell the Librarian, or Leontes' Housemaster Fergus Firetail, an enthusiastic artist of grand conjurations. So perhaps Iris Amethystine went into magical retirement for full-time work on greater magics, or perhaps she was traveling this world and others.

Of course Pernilla Porcinilla of Draconis succeeded as Headmistress, and the old quarters were Simply Not to be Borne for the head of the sort of place Boarbristle should be. The Headmistress' Chambers must be sumptuous, suitable for Important Visitors and the Good and The Great to come and go and know they were in a place of Significance.

Headmistress Iris had left her chambers clean and empty, so it was a modest effort between Wardress Euryale, Housemaster Whiptail, and Fergus Firetail to transform Iris' old chambers into the new first-year dormitories. They're fiercely warded in a way the old basement never was.

The wards vibrate conspicuously in your magical perceptions as you approach the first-year dormitories. You wonder if the firsties can concentrate with all that going on. Gives them an incentive to get good and strong at casting circles, you suppose.

Euryale stands within the first-year dormitory hall, on the other side of the warded threshold, in her hooded, enveloping robe and veil, holding her wand. A little brown snake head darts out from around the edge of the veil, flickers its tongue at you, and darts back inside.

"Wardress," you greet Euryale by inclining your head. "I wanted to ask about Miss Redmoor's lodgings, I..."

Euryale raises her hand. "Yes," she says. "The Tutor and I discussed where Miss Redmoor should stay. The first-year dormitory is full. With Miss Redmoor's stature..." Amazonian. Draconic. "...there is no question of double bunking here. Nor is there truly suitable space among the upper years' chambers."

If you could see the Wardress' eyes, you could be certain if she was staring you down. You don't know anyone who has claimed to have actually seen Euryale's eyes, or even her face above the chin.

"Yes, Wardress, I was going to ask if Miss Redmoor's chambers could be closer to Miss Applebum and myself," you say.

Euryale gives you a a slow nod. "Not as such. I have a recommendation."

"Wardress?" you say.

"Since you have engineered Miss Redmoor's transfer, it is appropriate for you to contribute to the necessary work to support her success," Euryale says. "Headmistress Amethystine's tower yet stands empty, as we had no need for its space. I offer you the duty of a full banishment and warding under my direction. When accomplished, that would provide suitable space for Miss Redmoor, Miss Applebum, and yourself to occupy. The tower will be easier to guard against any malice related to Miss Redmoor's transfer."

Your shoulders tighten. The look on Barbara Torch's face. You take a deep breath.

"Yes," you agree.

"Attend me tomorrow at dawn, at Amethystine's tower," Euryale says. "Until your work is complete, Miss Redmoor will use my quarters."

"Where will you be, Wardress?" you ask.

"I shall be working," Euryale says. "I need not sleep every night."

Euryale the Gorgon. Well then.

"Thank you, Wardress," you say. "I will be pleased to help."

"Miss Woodbine," Euryale says, bowing her head. "Good day."
