The food is ready

Luckily James was never the type to set a timer when it came to food, so there was no loud noise to frighten the pup away. He did notice the clock though, which told James the food was ready to come out. Turning the stove to warming, he opened it and took out one of the pans, the delicious smell permeating the room. Just as he set the pan down on the stove, James heard a quiet whimper behind him.

Turning, he found the smaller o- Um, Jade, had creeped up to him while his back was to her. She shrank back a little, but didn't retreat. Instead she look up to him with a hopeful and pleading look in her eyes. Jade was kneeling, her hands touching the floor, staring silently. James couldn't help but smile and reach behind him for one of the patties, holding it out to her.

Jade leaned forward, her jaws opening to reveal some fairly sharp teeth, which made James pull back just a little. She immediately stopped and closed her muzzle, tilting her head at him. Yea, James wasn't sure about letting those teeth come close to his hand, and he didn't want to remove the food from view at this point. What to do, what to do...

She seemed clever enough, so James pointed to his hand, the down to hers, then to the food, hoping she might understand. To his surprise, Jade got the hint immediately and raised her hand. Holding one hand up in front of her, she flexed it slowly a few times before reaching out for the food, only to be stopped again, this time by a low growl coming from the entrance to the kitchen.
