Chapter 8 by Syloren Syloren

Can you resist it?

You are too Inexperienced

You blast against the invading **** with all your might, but you begin to feel increasingly tired. Not physically, like you want to go to sleep, but mentally drained. You have a brief resurgence as you notice the tendrils reaching closer, but it seems to tire you out more and suddenly the tendrils ensnare you again and the eyes come to surround you once more.

"YOU. CHANGE. QUEEN." The tendrils penetrate your body, or your mental construct of it, once again. This time the encroaching mind feels different, before it had tried to destroy you but now it seems almost friendly. You suddenly feel a direct, mental connection with your captor. The last survivor of a great alien race, a tiny scared fragment of a great hivemind that had once threatened the stars. Then the climate, the atmosphere, something suddenly shifts. The creature dies, reduced to a fossil buried beneath this very house. Then the device. You don't understand it, neither of you do, but somehow it draws on that fossil, recreates the creature or clones it somehow. It grows throughout the room, only to find itself trapped. The very means of it's rebirth cage it within the house. It turns to the employees but nobody wants to enter, it lacks the means or knowledge of humans to entice them. And then you appear.

It sought to devour you, to render you down to a mere genetic slurry with which it could spawn something that could escape. But then you unlocked something. Some kind of psychic potential, locked deep inside you, brought about only by the life threatening danger you faced, and possibly the influence of that very device that led to everything that happened. The creature no longer saw you as food but as a partner, as a savior. Somehow even the fact that this thing had tried to kill you moments earlier does nothing in the face of the strange warmth you feel as you learn this. You can feel this alien truly wants, even treasures, you. You had always felt like a hanger-on, or even a detriment to your friends. At times you had even wished they would abandon you since there was no way in your mind you could do anything but drag them down.

But this creature truly values you, your abilities. You see yourself, remade in its' image, attaining unbelievable power. You rebuild the glorious swarm that the creature once led with you at it's head, you lead it once again on the stars with its' mission of absorbing all life into itself.

And a part of you likes it.

Do you join with the alien?
