Chapter 10 by telaviv telaviv telaviv telaviv

What's next?

A commotion in the park (Craig's perspective)

The park seemed peaceful as we aproached it, but Mackenzie hadn't even taken taken her sandals off when the yelling started. There was a group of people just beyond the first bend in the path, obscured by the bushes lining it. I couldn't see what was happening, but it sounded like someone was in a lot of pain and everyone else was shouting in anger. I told the girls to stay where they were while I continued into the park to see what was happening.

Rounding the bend, I was confronted with the awful sight of a crowd ganging up on a man lying on the ground, curled up with his arms over his head to protect it from the kicks he was recieving from every direction at once. Now I am a big guy and I stay in shape, but I'm not a fighter. There was no way I could break this up on my own.

Luckily, I didn't have to. While I still stood frozen, I saw several law enforcement robots approach the crowd from the other side. One of the assailants must have seen the robots too, because suddenly there was a shout of "LERs incoming! Scatter!"

The **** stopped immediately as everyone started running in different directions, diving through the bushes to evade the advancing wall of metal. Most of the bots veered off the path to pursue, while two approached the man who was still lying out in the open.

While I watched from a safe distance, one of the LERs deployed a medical assistance module and the other lifted the man onto it. Then both started trundling my way, so I retreated back to the park's entrance where Lea and Mackenzie were waiting for me. We hadn't done anything wrong, but when those things are at work it's best to stay out of the way without arousing suspicion by trying to leave the area. So we took a couple steps off the path and sat down on a nearby bench, where we did our best to look uninvolved while the injured man was carried past us to an ambulance waiting at the park's edge.

After the ambulance drove off with its patient and his escorts, a regular transporter van took its place. Moments later a second group of LERs left the park, pulling a leashed woman with blonde hair behind them. She was in her underwear and looked terrified, but not injured. The LERs helped her into the transport as gently as their robotic bodies were capable of.

Several of the people who had been attacking that man had been blond too, I realized as the transport's doors slammed shut.

What the hell just happened?
