Chapter 5 by rentirith

What does John ask about?

What's that wand?

"Oh this?" Gwen replied with a teasing lilt to her voice, like she knew the secret to an inside joke. "This is a magic wand. Just one twirl of it in your hands and you will be a powerful caster of spells, much like myself!"

You give her an incredulous look, as she doesn't look like any sort of witch you've heard about in those hairy pottery movies. Still, maybe this could still be a gag gift for some of your work buddies, the ones that keep playing that nerd game- what was it, monsters and maidens?

"You know what, sure. I'll take the wand." She smirks again as you hand over the cash and she hands you the stick of carved wood. You must have accidentally brushed her finger, as the moment you touch the wand a small sting of static electricity across your knuckles. You pull your hand back and look at it for a moment, but there isn't anything else noteworthy. You look up as Gwen clears her throat, holding what looks like an old moleskin notebook.

"The accompanying grimoire is extra."

Oh, that was what she was smiling about. What a scam. What next, she sells you an old crooked hat, and a robe and beard too? For a moment you feel like giving her a piece of your mind, but think better of it; you have better things to do than yell at some cheap scam artist. You turn towards the doorway, but there is a moment that you rethink leaving - should you leave the book behind? If nothing else, you have been trying to branch out with your interests, and some historical looking book might score you some points with the chicks who hang out by the library.

Do you leave the book or buy it?
