Resolution

Fully satisfied, I went back outside to wait for my party to return. Remembering my story, I thought about how I’d likely have to go see Reinfast again, I got into the bad mood I was supposed to be in. After a few minutes of waiting, the first to return was Sofia.

“Look Flynn! Look!” She said, running up waving a sack. “Look how much money we got for this!” Peering inside, the sack had tons of coins, various copper, silver, and even a few gold coins inside.

“What the hell!? This is way more than we were supposed to make. What’s going on?” I asked.

“Apparently some other guild members started a reward pool for the people protecting their friends’ resting places, and a bunch of people pitched in. Isn’t this awesome?” She said, filled with excitement.

“Yeah, I guess,” I said, trying to look disappointed.

“What’s wrong?” She asked, nearly dropping the sack of cash.

“The summoner got away. Reinfast was being so difficult, by the time we pulled him out, the summoner had already escaped,” I said, hanging my head.

“Damn! I wanted to get that guy back for trying to use me as a hostage.” She complained. “Oh well, at least we stopped them. They probably won’t be back.”

“Huh? Why?” I asked.

“Mages are really frail by themselves. They can do a lot of powerful spells, but that takes time, so mages either use other people to distract the enemy, or they use sneak attacks. A lone mage like that won’t try to come here again after being discovered and beaten.” Sofia said.

“Hey look, Lucille’s back.” I said, pointing to the Paladin and two guards behind her. Something about the guards was familiar.

“They got away,” said Sofia.

“Huh!? After all that?” Lucille complained. “Sorry guys, guess I brought you out here for nothing.”

“Huh, you!?” one guard pointed at me.

“Stair guy!?” I asked.

“You two know each other?” Lucille asked.

“Well, know each other is a bit much...” I said.

“This guy threatened to report us to Lord Vasquez!” The guard said angrily.

“Flynn!” Lucille said, astonished.

“Woah, woah, woah. I didn’t threaten anybody. I just figured dropping out employer’s name would get me past them faster...so I kinda sorta insinuated that maybe I’d tell on them...” I said, getting quieter as I went.

“You ass!” the guard yelled. “We’re done here. Thanks for wasting our time.” They stormed off, the first guard considerably angrier than the second, who merely waved ‘bye’ and followed after the other guard.

“Well that was...something.” Sofia said. “Let’s just go to the inn.” We all agreed.
