Chapter 4 by DankMemesAndCreams DankMemesAndCreams

Are you really ready for this?

Maybe not. Lets be realistic about this.

You steel yourself as you're stepping up to the front of the line. Your nerves are still there, but you're their master. When a booming voice calls for the next recruit, and even when you're ushered past a dejected-looking girl, you sit in front of an impressively muscled man with as much courage as you can muster.

"First, I'll need a name."

"Roland, sir."

"Capabilities and talents?"

"Worked a farm my whole life, sir. Not much else."

He raises an eyebrow. "Magical potency?"

"None that I'm aware of."

"... You do know that that's practically grounds to throw you out right now, right, son?"

"Yessir," you reply. "I'm not here because I think I'm a mean bastard. I know what I can do and I know what I can't. I don't plan on getting myself killed, but I've got to learn how to do this somehow."

"Mind the lip, kid," he bites, and you flinch at his reprimand. "The guildhall is sponsored by the Church, and I was once a paladin for it. I won't have you filling it with coarse words in the future, you hear?"

"Yessir," you reply immediately. "Wait... you mean..."

"I like your attitude. Practical. Aware. You aren't infatuated with the romance of it all, and that means you'll live longer than half the boys I've let through today. They saw the pretty heroes over there and thought that'd be them. They're a bunch of models, paid by the guild to stand around and look good to bring in fresh blood. A stupid thing to do, but I don't get to make decisions." He sighs, looking back at you. "Sorry, I got off-topic. Point is, you should take classes. You head out now, you'll probably be something's meal before dusk. They're about twenty gold a day, but they'll cover food 'n board. Can you afford that?"

You shake your head. "Not more than a week, sir."

"Even a week would do you good, lad. But you'd need more gold or a sponsor. I can tell you right now that you're better off doing the latter... but bounties will get you the gold you need much faster. Risky. Dangerous. But I won't hold you back from the grunt work if you're dead set on it. What'll it be?"

You furrow your brow, unsure of the right move to take. "Do I have to choose now? I'd like to think it over if I can."

He nods, reaching for a sheet of parchment and a small pin. "The paper's a bounty list, up-to-date as of yesterday. They should all be good, if you decide that's what you want. The pin will get you in the guildhall proper, and let you cash in bounties if you do so. It's enchanted to come back to you if you drop it, but try to keep it safe anyway. Magic's a fickle thing."

"Thank you, sir!" you say, unable to hold back a smile.

"Don't thank me yet," the man replies, but you can't help but think he's sitting a little straighter in his chair than before.

Of course, you've only postponed your decision. You could take the training and drop out immediately, your small savings spent. You could search for a sponsor instead, which would guarantee your funds for the foreseeable future, but also tie you to them for that same period of time. Or, you could head out into the wide-wide world in search of a bounty.

In the end, it's clear that you should...
