Chapter 3 by pistachio pistachio

Which one?

Looks like a Lap Cat

She sits there with such poise. Her ears are black velvet outside with pink satin inside attached to a black headband. She has black hair, emerald green eyes, and pale skin. She has whiskers drawn on her face and her nose is a triangle coloured the same pink as her ears. The same pink is used on her velvet collar. She's wearing a white blouse and black cardigan with short, black, pleated skirt. There's even a hard-covered book sitting beside her, like she couldn't part with it. She looks like an indoor lap cat girl.

You fondly remember petting your childhood cat as the tomcat sat in your lap. Maybe you can experience the same thing with this new pet. That would be relaxing after a long day of classes. And those bouncy cats that can't stay still won't let you get used to being away from your big, noisy family. Nope, the quiet one is the one for you!

She's a bit further down the line, so you start walking towards her. Most of the pets are watching your every step, perking up as you get closer to them. The one you've chosen, watches with little expression on her face. She's curious just like all the rest; you can see it in her eyes. You stop walking in front of her and turn to face her.

You crouch down. "Would you like to come home with me?"

The curiosity in her eyes grows. "Maybe," she says coquettishly. "What are you like? Is your home a quiet place?"

You chuckle. "Well, that's not a no. I just moved into my first apartment and it should be pretty quiet. You'd be my first pet so it would just be us living there. My name is John. What's yours?"

At this, she pulls a name card on a string out from under her cardigan. "My name is Tibby," she says brightly. You continue to read on the card that her adoption fee is $100.

You didn't know what you expected, but it wasn't that. You look at the owner. "Isn't that a bit low?"

The older lady laughs. "Don't worry. You'll be spending money on her soon enough. She has a higher wardrobe budget than most. But you will save on her costume budget: mostly eyeliner pencils and a few headbands. She takes good care of her things."

You look at Tibby again. "It's good that you take care of your things. If you come home with me, your wardrobe budget might have to wait. I'm just starting college next month. Think you can slow down adding to your wardrobe?"

She nods her head and reaches out to hug you. You look up at the woman and say, "I'll take this one."

As you get up, Tibby scampers to a back room while you pay the adoption fee. She comes back out with two suitcases, a gym bag, and a big, black garbage bag. She sings out, "I'm ready!"

You offer to help as you grab a suitcase handle. Tibby politely asks Ashley to carry the garbage bag. Ashley says, "Sure. Hey, this is really light! What do you have in here? Balloons?"

Tibby ducks her head and blushes. She shakes her head and says, "No, cushions. They make reading so much better sometimes, right?" Ashley just shrugs and keeps moving.

And so, the three of you walk out the door. Many of the pets wave to Tibby as you walk by.

Does anything happen on your way home?
