Chapter 6

What was the result of that explosion?
Not much harm, but plenty of destruction.
As Haruka's sensors came back online, she immediately checked her internal clock. Not much time had passed since she went online, although there was a hole in her recorded memory. She had fired the cannon, and then... What? Nonetheless, she was now conscious again. As her vision was restored, Haruka found herself staring into the face of Captain Astara, framed by her short lilac-colored hair. "Rebecca... is our mission complete?"
"You did it, Haruka! What a handy android."
Haruka could feel Rebecca's hand patting her head... This combination of strangely faint praise and the odd gesture made her feel uncomfortable, more than anything, but her heart felt full from finally bringing their duty to an end. Actually, her body felt... "Rebecca. Where is my body?"
"Oh yeah, about that..." When Rebecca finally extended her arms, Haruka became aware her disembodied android head was resting in the captain's palms. For her, that wasn't too strange of an occurrence... There was plenty more strange to note.
First off, the captain was completely naked, with only spare scraps of her former pilot suit remaining. Haruka stared at her friend's impressive chest for a moment, before the captain blushed just slightly and spoke to her in a commanding voice. "Don't stare, Ensign! That's an order!"
Next, the two were no longer in darkness. It seemed as though the explosion had wiped the tower out completely... all that was left around them was rubble. Something felt very off about it... Haruka briefly entertained the idea of trying to calculate the vectors of the explosion, or compare the volume of the tower previously to the amount of rubble that was remaining, but she quickly gave up on that as she noticed a more concerning point. "Rebecca... The two of us just saved the galaxy," Haruka noted with a sour frown.
"Right! Congratulations, Haruka."
"So... is that an appropriate way to leave the body of one of the saviors of the galaxy?"
As Rebecca had turned the android's head, it had allowed her to get a good look at the state of her own body. Like Rebecca's it seemed to be completely unharmed and completely naked, but, unlike Rebecca's, it was lying chest-down and ass-up, her naked butt exposed and presented to anyone who cared to look. Conspicuously, the cannon seemed to be completely gone... Haruka couldn't even see any remains of its previous attachment.
"Ahaha... Sorry, Haruka. It fell that way, and I was afraid to touch it. Besides, it's no big deal for an android anyway, is it?"
"... I suppose not," Haruka muttered, although she still felt slightly disrespected. As Rebecca slotted her friend's head back onto her body, the android remembered one final thing. That Lockhart person... their signature had disappeared entirely, along with any other sentient life here beyond the two of them. In their state of nudity, Haruka supposed that was a good thing. Still... "I am uneasy about everything. In spite of our victory, nothing feels right. There are too many unexplained circumstances that don't add up at all, wouldn't you agree?"
"Hm..." Rebecca seemed to be thinking seriously, the same way Haruka had seen her making tough decisions in her captain's chair before, minus the clothing normally associated with that station. "I can't say I notice anything in particular."
"You can't?" The android let some urgency creep into her voice now, beginning to think her captain might need medical attention. "Perhaps you are disoriented, or simply feeling the effects of adrenaline. Did you not notice how the explosion eradicated our weaponry and uniforms while leaving our bodies intact? Or how it somehow destroyed my cannon completely, but knocked only my head from my body? Or how there are no bodies in this rubble in spite of the life signatures we picked up before?"
"Those are all valid concerns, Haruka, and I'll make a note of them in my report. However, don't you think doing something about our current situation is more important than worrying about that? I mean... you're an android, but humans like me can't just hang around with boobs bare to the wind! As an android with no boobs to speak of, maybe you can't understand."
"Excuse me...?" As she rose from the ground, Haruka worked to keep her emotions in check at her captain's uncharacteristically blunt statement. "I am quite capable of synthesizing all emotions and reactions of humans, I simply choose not to as the times call for it. I am also capable of upgrading... I mean, if I wanted to, I could install bigger... Tch." The android tapered off, glancing around.
A bigger concern than her hurt feelings became readily apparent.
What do Haruka and Rebecca need to worry about now?
