John shrugged and decided that the only thing he could actually cast on her would be Theft, and her inventory opened. She didn’t have much on her, but John chuckled under his breath as he pulled her panties to his inventory.

“That was really cool, Ellie, and that book has things you can make for defence and offence?” John asked.

“Ohhhhh, yeah,” Ellie smiled, “this thing has all sorts of stuff. It has, like, poisons and explosives, it even has the process to make Alchemist's Fire. I’ll have to practice a little bit. Yeah, it has everything I need.”

“Did you read any of the other books?” John asked.

“No, Dewdrop said that they were theories so it would be best to read them later, when I have time, and Alchemy is more practical and could be more dangerous if I was to try doing anything with it on my own if she didn’t give me a run down. Seems pretty safe now, though, I just have to make sure to keep my eyes on what I’m working on and to use quartz if I need to infuse anything with mana, it’s like a mana pipette and I can get you to charge them up for me too so I don’t even need mana to infuse magic into anything,” Ellie rambled.

“That sounds good, how will you practice though? Don’t you need an alchemy station or something? We might have to go looking for somewhere to buy stuff. I have a teacher who knows stuff about magic… though she might get mad at me for asking; she’s not exactly the nicest person.” John shrank a little as he began speaking of Wentworth.

“Well, Dewdrop said she was going to get a few things for me to begin working with. I think the first things I’m going to try making are a few of the explosives. It seems that the weaker ones are pretty easy to make, plus I’m sure I can experiment with a few other things too,” Ellie bubbled.

“Alright, cool… Oh shit, I almost forgot.” John turned to Lani. “Do you have the Crystalised Dragon Blood for me?”

Lani smiled. “Of course, while you got yourself lost I picked it up. Here.” She tossed the gem over to John. This one looked almost identical to the last but seemed to have a slight magenta sheen. Seeing the slight difference John decided to use Observe on the new crystal.

Immediately his arms began cramping; it felt like his muscles would tear themselves to pieces. His skin burned and even feeling the air on it caused pain. Tears welled up in his eyes and everyone rushed over to him.

“I-I’m fine,” he gasped. All three girls looked on with concern. John thought the pain was fading, before his skin began ripping away from his forearms and hands to make way for grey looking scales as well as sharp claws which capped each finger. Finally, the pain began to dull, though it did not vanish completely.

“Vox?” John said, confused. “What does Vox mean?”

Dewdrop fluttered towards John. “Vox is an element, like Water, Earth, Fire and Air but Vox is… Well, it’s much rarer. And other than being able to tell you that it is, in essence, the element of magic, I can’t offer much more than that.”

“That’s not a lot to go on, but I guess it’s better than nothing. I’ll probably have to look into it more then… On the upside I actually have an element now, so I could use elemental attunement,” John said as he inspected his arms and hands. The scales and claws didn’t seem to impede his movement, and looking at the tips of his fingers, he could tell they were razor-sharp. John smiled as he realised he’d actually finally gotten something that could be useful in a fight. He interlaced his fingers and pushed forward causing a satisfying crack.

Looking at the back of his hands, each of his knuckles had thicker scales on them. Running a claw over them made a scraping sound, like dragging a stick across the rough bark of a tree. “I think these might help in a fight. Much more useful than just being able to see better,” John chuckled. He decided it might be safer to test them out in a barrier like Wentworth had suggested. He focused on his hands returning to normal and the scales began peeling away. Luckily for John, there was no pain this time.

“Uh… John… You okay?” Ellie asked unnerved by the pain John had gone through.

John smiled and walked over to Ellie and hugged her. “I’m fine. I was expecting the pain this time and it was worth it to actually get something good… Uh, wait, no, the eyes are really good but these claws should be great in a fight.”

Ellie hugged him before pulling back and punching him hard in the arm. “Warn me next time! You ass!”

“Ahhh, okay. Sorry, sorry.” John raised his hands defensively.

Ellie sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose. “As much as I’d like to stick around, Leilani, could you take us back to the portal thingy? Today has been a little too exciting,” Ellie admitted. With that Dewdrop ran off.

Lani smiled. “Sure thing, but I expect to see you again. I’m not finished with my new mate yet and I believe that I owe you some fun too, Ellie.”

John, Ellie and Lani laughed as Dewdrop raced back, holding quite a large rucksack and a secondary bag. “Okay the smaller bag has a basic kit in it so you can practice Alchemy, and the larger one has some ingredients in it. Be careful with the kit and make sure to remember everything I told you,” she said as she handed the bags to Ellie. By the look of it, the bags were much heavier than expected. John reached out and placed them into his inventory.

Dewdrop looked at him for a moment then pulled out several crystals. “Here are some Quartz crystals. Just focus your magic into them and then Ellie will be able to use them for creating anything involving magic infusion.” She passed the crystals over to John.

John, Ellie and Leilani all left Dewdrop to what she was doing prior to their intrusion. Lani led them out of the tree and they began walking towards the arch into the dense forest. “Wait one minute! Your Highness!” two voices called out in unison.

The trio turned to see the blue and pink haired fairies from earlier. “Oh, Blossom… Aster… What a joy to see you… Glad you could come and wave us goodbye,” Lani laughed nervously.

“I don’t think so,” the blue-haired one said.

“We told you, you were not leaving the Grove without an escort again,” the other insisted.
