Chapter 37 by daciasdesire daciasdesire

Monday morning.

Hitting the ground running.

The wolf/fox/whatever it is wasn’t seen again and Spencer and Amy went on about their day.

The next morning Spencer dropped Amy off at school in a taxi and continued on to the hire car company. With the metre running Spencer didn’t hang around at the school to see anyone.

At the Avonwick car rentals, Spencer had to wait about 45 minutes while the car was made ready for him. It had arrived earlier but needed to be washed again before Spencer could have the keys. Spencer’s insurance policy covered him for a like for like replacement. The car they gave him a nice mid-ranged BMW sedan in blue.

From there Spencer called in on the Avonwick Sheriff’s department. Deputy Evelyn Malone had asked him to come in and see about some items that were retrieved from his car after the accident. Spencer found it was Evelyn working behind the stations counter when he walked inside. Spencer felt a moment's hesitation and embarrassment about his bathrobe coming open and him flashing the deputy.

If she felt awkward at all she didn’t show it when she greeted him, “good morning Spencer. Here about the property?”

Spencer was glad she had called him by his first name. Even though he was here on business he didn’t like to be too formal in his everyday life. “Good morning to you too Evelyn. Yes, just calling in as you asked.”

“That’s great. I’ll just duck out the back and we can see what it all is,” Evelyn told Spencer as she got up from her chair behind the large front desk.

Spencer couldn’t help but admiring the deputy as she walked away from him. As part of her job and part of her life too, Evelyn tried to stay as fit as could be. It helped keep her safe. It wasn’t easy being a female in law enforcement. Criminals didn’t take it easy on her because she was a girl if she had to arrest them. Spencer’s eyes taking in Evelyn’s tight bubble ass as she retreated back into the station, her standard-issue Deputy’s uniform looking damn good on her. Perhaps it wasn’t just women that liked a man in uniform.

Evelyn was glad Spencer had come in today. She’d had to swap rostered assignments with another deputy that morning to be there in case Spencer showed up. Normally being stuck behind the desk was the worst job of the lot, the other deputy only too eager to make the switch with her.

There were two boxes and both of them were very heavy. Evelyn picking up the first one and bringing it back out to the front. Spencer could hear the scraping of tiles when Evelyn put it down on the counter. He knew exactly what it was.

“These are Darcie’s, Mrs Collins, not mine,” Spencer told Evelyn when she opened the box to let him look inside. It was the samples the owner of the Cherryville tile wholesaler had given them.

“Thank you for clearing that up. We can get them sent on to Mrs Collins. I just need you to fill out a form seeing as they came in under your name,” Evelyn told Spencer taking a property release form from out of pigeon-hole for Spencer to complete.

As Spencer quietly filled out the paperwork, Evelyn turned the information she’d just receive over in her mind. So, Spencer and Darcie Collins had been in Cherryville together when the accident occurred. Darcie was still happily married to her husband Tony as far as she knew. Were Spencer and Darcie having an affair together? Was that the real reason for their trip to Cherryville? Evelyn hadn’t liked to think like that, to begin with, but several years as a Sheriff’s deputy had changed her way of viewing the world. Not that Evelyn blamed Darcie at all. She’d seen Spencer’s package for herself yesterday and it was impressive. If he was sleeping with Darcie, then perhaps he would…

“That all looks great,” Evelyn said scanning the form to make sure Spencer had filled it out completely. As she took it off the counter and put it on the desk, Evelyn quickly wrote her phone number down across the personal information section of another form. “Just one more thing. Here’s a permit if you ever want to register that concealed weapon you were packing yesterday.”

Spencer blushed a deep red as he looked down at the form and saw Evelyn’s number written boldly across the top. He’d thought she wouldn’t mention what had happened. It went a very different way instead.

Spencer fumbled a response and quickly retreated from the Sherriff’s Department. Back in his car, he looked again at Evelyn’s number on the paper in the passenger seat. Driving away as his embarrassment started to fade, Spencer was instead left starting to feel pretty good about himself. Sure, things had ended with Darcie but his romantic and physical outlook was starting to look more and more rosy in his mind. He’d had a pretty wonderful time with Danielle the other night, now Evelyn giving him her number plus some higher than usual number of advances on him by other people recently. Spencer was feeling pretty pleased alright.

As he now had use of the hire car, Spencer then went to the furniture sellers and picked out two complete bedroom sets for each of his upstairs guest rooms. He chose rustic country style furniture that he thought would match well with the rest of the house. Putting it on his credit card, he also paid extra for it to be delivered tomorrow as well as having the workers assemble it once it was dropped off. Spencer could have done it himself but he would much rather pay someone else and save himself the hassle.

Spencer also stopped in town to get some groceries for him and Amy for the following week. Pushing his trolley down the isles slowly filling it up, Spencer was content to return the friendly greetings of the town’s residents as he met them. He added the grocery bill to his credit card along with the furniture and headed home until he needed to pick Amy up.

Picking up Amy in the new BMW.
