Chapter 3 by Yabusa Yabusa

Who summoned the tech wizard?

Zoe, living bodysuit, bit of a third wheel

You stepped into Lab 9A, Zoe's personal office, seeing Dr. Hildebrand staring at something in a microscope before she looks up with a smile. "Oh, hey there, Logan. Feels like forever since we last talked."

"Forever isn't all that long ago, I fixed your centrifuge last week," you reminded her.

Zoe stepped away from her work, strolling toward you. There was something slightly different about her today, maybe it was the clothes she wore under her lab coat were a little more showy than normal? Her expression, the way she strolled with a little extra sway to her hips? You immediately got the impression that Dr. Hildebrand was not going to ask you for something trivial like fixing her sink. Which you would refuse to do anyway, because despite what the whole building seems to think, just because you fix some things doesn't mean you fix everything.

"I suppose you're right. I guess I've had a lot on my mind. Do you mind if I ask you something a bit... personal?"

You were briefly blindsided by the direction the discussion swerved, but you shrugged all the same. You were on friendly terms with Zoe, so you saw no reason not to indulge her. "Sure, ask away. Is that all this is about, or should I be fixing something in the meantime?"

"Oh, right." Zoe seemed to glance around, like finding something for you to fix had been an afterthought. "My spectrometer could use calibration, think you could help me with that?"

You nodded, taking your tools over to one of the lab workstations. This was such a huge space for just one person, there could easily be a dozen people working in the area Zoe claimed as her own, but she was extremely secretive and protective of something, and she still was constantly finding breakthroughs for Hideki Labs, so it seemed like it wasn't really an issue, just odd. Her labs also had a great view, with one wall of windows completely looking out towards the city.

You sat down in front of the spectrometer, opening up the paneling to take a look. "Sometimes the mirrors on these things need a polish, I bet that's--"

"How are things going with Kim?"

You paused. You'd never directly talked to Zoe about Kim, so you were surprised she knew the name, but you'd mentioned Kim many times in the breakrooms and cafeterias downstairs, and Dr. Hildebrand frequented those areas enough that she'd likely know some information. "We're in a rough patch. I'm trying to make it work, but it's not easy lately. Why do you ask?"

Zoe's expression briefly looked a little disappointed when you glanced at her, like she'd hoped for different news. However, she smiled at you again when you looked her way. "I was thinking... maybe for all the help you've given me over the past while, I could maybe help you connect with her again. As a... favor."

"I didn't think you were that kind of a doc, doc," you said as you turned back to your work. Zoe could tell she wasn't making enough headway in the conversation.

"I'm, well, I'm not. But I have a lot of talents that you might find incredibly useful! Talents that I could use on you, Kim, or both of you together! It might help you and her gain some perspective. No one else can do what I can do, I promise you that."

You were only really partly paying attention by then, inspecting one of the mirrors you removed. If Dr. Hildebrand was genuinely offering her help with your relationship, maybe it was worth taking. At the same time, it felt like she had some ulterior motive, and you weren't sure you wanted to get Kim into whatever trouble Zoe was cooking up.

Do you take Zoe up on her offer?
