Chapter 11

Well isn't that cute. But I thought this was a sex story?
Patience is a virtue. But so is chastity, I guess? I forgot what my point was.
Eventually though, the two of you need to get a move on. While you're still a few hours from the mall's closing time, Morgan mentioned earlier in the date that she has class tomorrow morning, and apparently it's one she can't risk missing. As much as you both hate being responsible adults, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to be out all night crowd watching.
The drive back to her home is pleasant enough, but relatively quiet. It's not so much that you don't want to talk, it's just that you're kind of in your own head at the moment. And you're fairly sure Morgan is too... unless she's just enjoying the playlist you've got on at the moment.
This is probably the best date you've had since... well, ever, and you really hope Morgan feels the same. You're now certain that, without the app, Morgan would be absolutely out of your league. She's effortlessly funny, but surprisingly sweet when she wants to be, with a hot body that could probably land her any guy she wanted. And there's something attractive, maybe even sexy, about the confidence she has in the way she dresses and carries herself. Two weeks ago, you'd have assumed you had a snowball's chance in hell of getting a girl like her to notice you. But unlike the old Jason, you've got a lot more confidence now thanks to the app. And since you've seen her scores, you know she at least enjoys your company. Even though you haven't had a chance to check the app in hours, being able to know with certainty how someone feels about you isn't just convenient, it's empowering.
You push those thoughts aside as you pull up in front of her house.
"Well, we're here," you say, and to your surprise she jumps a little. She must've been deeper in thought than you were.
"Oh, right. Yeah," she answers you. She looks over at you, and once again you're struck by how radiant her eyes are.
"I hope I wasn't too awkward today," you say in all sincerity. "It's been a little while since I've had a date." Which was true, as long as a couple years could be interpreted as a little while.
She gives you her sly little side smile. "Well, you might've been a little bit clingy, but who said we were done?" she says, as she pulls out that wooden card box from her hoody. "I promised you a reading, right?" She opens the car door and steps out, but leans back in a moment later. "Come on, I've got to make this quick."
You can't help but smile as you put the car in park. This night is looking like it's about to get even more interesting.
If the fact they were willing to pay out of pocket for college wasn't enough, the inside of her home makes it clear that her parents are loaded. The house itself is on the "upper middle class" side of a family home, not that you are particularly knowledgeable about housing. The front foyer, and the living room beyond from what you can see, is well decorated with paintings. Maybe one of her parents was a collector; they're mostly landscapes, and they certainly all echo the same style. You don't have much time to observe, however, as Morgan leads you into what appears to be a dining room (with even more paintings and wall decorations) and situates herself on one end of a large oak table. You take a seat near her on the corner, as she takes her cards out of their wooden box and begins shuffling.
"So how much do you know about the Tarot?" she asks.
"Uhh... not much," you admit. "Everything I know about it I've picked up from video games, to be honest. It's for fortune telling, right?"
She chuckles. "Yes and no. The cards can carry a lot of different meanings, but personally, I like to see them as a way of looking for advice."
"Advice?" you inquire.
"Yeah. Like, I ask the cards a question, I deal a spread, and I try to find meaning in it. I'm not really superstitious, but it's kind of a hobby of mine." She places the shuffled deck in front of you. "I'm going to do a simple three card spread for you. Linear, past present future, representing one question. What do you want to know?"
"Uh..." You think for a moment. "I dunno. What do you usually ask?"
"Something like, 'What classes should I take this semester,' or 'What should I do about this person that's been annoying me'. That kind of thing."
"Okay... I guess I'd ask, what can I do to get a certain someone to... like me?"
"Oh, is that what you're going with?" she says with a smile. "Someone I know, Jason?"
"Shut up," you retort, lamely. "It's my first time doing something like this, it was the first thing that came to mind."
"Oh don't worry, I'll be gentle for your first time," she says sarcastically. "Go ahead and cut the deck."
You do so, and she takes the cards from you. "Alright," she begins. "The first card of the spread represents your past, let's say in regards to this specific person." She flips the top card over in front of her with a small flourish, revealing a man in what looks like medieval clothing. His arms are crossed, and he's sitting cross legged in front of a tree. In the foreground are three yellow goblets, with a fourth one being held in front of him by... a cloud with a hand coming out of it.
"Ah," she says knowingly. "The Four of Cups. The cup suit represents water in a symbolic sense, relating to healing, cleansing, relationships, and intuition," her face shows a look of... curiosity? You're not sure you've ever seen Morgan make this face before. She seems to be taking this reading somewhat seriously. "The Four of Cups in particular represents boredom, or taking something for granted. It's a sign to appreciate what you have, or move on from it."
"Okay, so what does that mean?"
"Well," she continues, "We're talking about the past right? I'd say it probably means that this person you're thinking of didn't used to find you particularly interesting. Or perhaps, they didn't realize how much you actually had to offer them." She seems lost in thought for a moment, before shaking her head. "Let's move on. It'll probably make more sense when we see the context of the next two cards."
The flips the next card over, revealing a hand holding a single large yellow goblet, with water coming out of it like a fountain. Above, there is a dove holding a what looks like white circle with a cross on it. Maybe it's a communion wafer? Tarot is fucking weird.
"The Ace of Cups." She says, somewhat surprised. "The aces represent new beginnings. So the Ace of Cups might mean a new relationship, or the blossoming of an existing one." She looks up at you. "What is it with you and cups?"
You chuckle. "You're the one doing the reading, not me."
"Hmm. Since this represents the present, I can only see one way to read this. This person is starting to change their mind about you. There's something growing between the two of you." She gives a small snort of derision. "Fuck, what a sappy spread so far."
She quickly flips over the one more card, revealing a man carrying a bindle stick and a rose, a small dog yapping at his heels, as he walks along the edge of a cliff. This one, unlike the other two, looks a little familiar to you. You've probably seen it in a movie or a game before.
"The Fool," she says flatly. "Huh. Really. The Fool."
"What?" you ask, somewhat confused by her reaction.
She hold the card up in front of you. "The Fool is one of the major arcana. The major arcana are... they're a big deal, Jason. They carry more weight than the other cards, and since there's only twenty two of them, they don't show up as often." She flips it around to look at it. "The Fool is free of burden and cares, and waltzes through life with an open mind and a sense of adventure. He's the zero card of the major arcana, representing boundless opportunity, but he's easily manipulated and tricked." She gives a wry smile. "And he can also represent excessive sexuality."
You nod as you smile. "That all sounds like me, yeah."
She shakes her head. "But it's representing your future. It's saying you need to be more like The Fool, for the sake of the person you're thinking of."
"Huh," is all you can respond with.
Morgan looks up and locks eyes with you. She's got this look on her face that's hard to read. There's curiosity there, but also a measure of sadness. Maybe... pity?
But a moment later, she breaks it. "Anyway, you need to get out of here. I've got shit to do before bed."
"So soon?" you respond. "I mean, I thought maybe we could hang out for a bit or something."
She stands up from her chair as she begins to put her cards back in their case. "Nah, I don't want to risk my mom coming home and finding you here. She's kind of a bitch about boys."
"Bummer."
"Hey, I promised you a Tarot reading, not a fucking tour of my house. Now let's go."
She walks you back to the front door, but before you go to open it, she stops you with a hand on your shoulder. You turn around to face her, and she looks up at you with her usual smile.
"Hey," she starts, "I know I came off a little harsh, but I just want you to know that I had a really good time today."
"Thanks, Morgan," you reply. "To be honest, I like how harsh you are. It suits you. And for my part, I tried really hard to not be an asshole today." You get a laugh out of her from that one. "You want to do this again sometime?"
She nods. "Yeah, I do." She quickly grabs you by your jacket and pulls you down into a kiss you were only half expecting. It's a quick little kiss on the lips, somewhat chaste, but it's still a surprise, and a welcome one at that.
You both stand there for a second, awkwardly, before she says "Fuck it," out loud and pulls you back into another kiss. This one is far less chaste, and it isn't long before she's probing your lips with her tongue. You realize that you instinctively know what to do, and though she started it, you're soon leading her in a deep french kiss while standing the foyer of her house. You don't let it go on too long, breaking it after a handful of seconds. But when you do break it, she has look of awe on her face, and her black lipstick is smeared over her lips.
"Whoah," she says after a moment, in a bit of a daze. "That was... unexpected."
"I'm glad you liked, it," you respond, trying (and failing) to not sound as cocky as you felt.
After you said your goodbyes and made your way back to your car, you finally have a chance to check your phone, and more importantly, the app. And... there's a lot on it. The first thing on the app is a notification that seems to go on forever of all the score changes that happened on your date. You quickly dismiss it; you don't really need to read a play by play at the moment. You make your way to Morgan's profile, to get the basic summary on what's actually changed changed today. And sure enough, a lot has changed.
