Chapter 85
by
Ben Rosewood
What's next?
The in-laws come over
Spencer made sure to get up early on Saturday morning, unsure of when his in-laws would make an appearance. After his shower, he sent Evelyn a text wishing her a good morning and a peaceful day at work. As he went through his morning routine, he continued to wonder when his in-laws would come.
He got his answer at around 10 o'clock when his doorbell rang. Upon opening the door, he found his in-laws Abigail and Geoff waiting.
"Hello dear." Abigail then hugs Spencer tightly.
"Hey."
Once Abigail let go of Spencer, he shook Geoff's hand. The three head inside, where Abigail gave Amy an even tighter hug. Spencer then offered to make coffees before sitting down. The four proceeded to catch up on what's been happening in each other's lives. The only thing he avoided talking about was his new love, as he was still unsure how they'd take it.
Eventually, Abigail addressed it. "So, will we get to meet Erin?"
"Evelyn." Spencer corrected.
"Oh. Right... Sorry."
"It's okay. Maybe she'll be free tomorrow, but she can be pretty busy, so..."
"That's fine."
With nobody else speaking, Spencer thought of how best to move the conversation. Before he could speak thought, Geoff said "So does Evelyn have any kids?"
"Yeah she has two boys from a previous marriage. They're nice though."
"That's good to hear. How old are they?"
"About Amy's age." Spencer turned to Amy. "Logan's in your class, isn't he?"
"Yeah."
"You get along with them?" Abigail asked.
"Yeah they're alright for boys I guess."
The three adults do their best to tame the blunt, yet sincere statement from Amy. Abigail then said "Well she sounds lovely. I can't wait to meet her."
"Nor can I." Geoff added.
"Well, we'll see I guess." Despite his in-law's enthusiasm, Spencer still spoke with uncertainty. Deep down he felt this shouldn't be happening. Kristen should still be here with them, and he should still be in DC. He also couldn't deny there was something between him and Evelyn. Something more than just friendship, but he wondered if it was anything like what he had with Kirsten. Maybe he'd just reached a point of desperation, hoping to find what he had lost seven years ago.
At that point, he knew the self-doubt would rack around his brain for the rest of the weekend.
But does it affect his weekend?
