Chapter 6 by Control Freak Control Freak

What does this 'Mr. Light' want to talk about? And perhaps more importantly, what happened to Becky?

The secret of the manor, of which Becky is the first victim

The pain in Becky's head eventually subsides, enough that her vision clears and she is able to open her eyes once more. The first thing that she notices is that the room she is in is now much more illuminated than it was when she entered, something which she quickly realizes is due to all of the candles lining the walls now being lit. The second is that the vibration of the room, though still present, is far softer than it had been initially, now relegated to a mere hum in the background.

Now feeling mostly clear-headed, Becky tries once more to open the door, and once more fails to do so.

"Roger!" she shouts, "Roger, are you still out there?"

After a few seconds of no response, Becky pulls out her phone to try and call him, only to see that she has no signal. Sighing in frustration, and reasoning that Roger must have gone to find something to get the door open, Becky decides to take a closer look around the room while she waits. Not that there's much to look at: other than the table with the lone candle on it, the room is completely empty. Oddly enough, that lone candle, the one that had lured her in here to begin with, is now snuffed out, making it the only candle in the room not lit.

Curious, Becky tries to pick the candle up off the table, only to find it firmly stuck in place. Even using both hands, she is unable to make it budge a single inch. Through experimentation, she finds that the same is true for the table itself, as well as all of the candles lining the walls.

"So much for a secret exit," Becky mutters. With nothing else to do, she opens a Tetris app on her phone and begins playing. She slides down onto the floor, her back against the wall, silently wishing there was even one chair in this room.

Roger isn't entirely sure why, but he finds himself willing to hear this man out, especially since he assured him that Becky is fine. Sitting up straighter in his chair, he asks, "Alright, what do you want to tell me?"

Mr. Light folds his hands on the table and begins to elaborate, "As you know, your great-uncle invited you here in order to give you an inheritance. What he did not tell you, and indeed what he may not have even known to begin with, is that it was not his inheritance to give. You see before he met me your great-uncle was, to put it bluntly, a penniless loser. I am the one who gave him this house and the wealth that his living relatives are so desperately clamoring for. Hence, I feel that it is only appropriate that I am the one who decides what happens to it all now that he is no longer on this mortal coil."

"But... you said you weren't his lawyer," Roger points out, still not entirely sure where this was going.

Mr. Light lets out a low laugh, which despite its warmth causes a chill to go down Roger's spine, "Oh Roger, this is far beyond the scope of the laws of man, as you are about to discover."

Roger isn't sure how to respond to this statement, something Mr. Light quickly picks up on, "Allow me to get to the point. The other inheritors of your great-uncle will only be getting his wealth, but rather than any paltry monetary sum I have decided that your inheritance will be this house."

This catches Roger's attention, "Wait, so I'm not getting any money? Just this mansion?"

Mr. Light nods, "You'll get a few thousand dollars, to cover moving expenses and the like, but yes, this house and everything in it will be the bulk of your inheritance. But believe me when I say that you are getting the most valuable of your great-uncle's assets."

Roger raises an eyebrow, "What do you mean by that?"

"This house was designed to be a nexus of magic," Mr. Light explains, setting a single unlit candle in the center of the table, "Every room is capable of tapping into that power in different ways, allowing its owner, who is now you, to alter the very fabric of reality."

"So... you're saying this house is magical," Roger says. He certainly didn't feel any more magical now than he had before coming in, but while still skeptical, he feels compelled to ask, "What can I do with it?"

"Depends on which room you are in," Mr. Light said with a shrug, "This room for instance, is the Divination Room. As for what it can let you do... well, I think it'll be easier to understand if I just show you."

Mr. Light snaps his fingers, and all of the candles on the walls go out at once. At the same time, the candle sitting in the middle of the table lit on its own, now serving as the main source of light in the room.

Becky is startled out of her game as the lone candle on the table suddenly lights itself. Cautiously, but curiously, she approaches the otherwise empty table, to examine the candle more closely.

Roger gasps in shock as Becky, who had appeared in the room suddenly, approaches the table. As she gets closer he realizes that she is semitransparent, appearing like a ghost or spirit.

"Becky!" he shouts, "Becky, are you okay? Why do you...?"

"She cannot see or hear us," Mr. Light interrupts. The truth of his words become clear as Becky fails to respond to either of them, being more transfixed on the candle.

"What did you do to her?" Roger snaps, turning on the man in the white suit.

"As I told you before, she's fine," Mr. Light said, pulling a deck of cards out from under the table, "Merely in another plane of existence. Once we are done in this room, she will return to the material plane. What state she will be in when she returns, though..."

He starts shuffling the cards, "...well, that's up to you."

What does he mean by that?
