Ryan decided his wife should get her own phone.

"If we're going to contact your friend I guess we should get you a phone first," Ryan suggested while they walked towards Broadway. "That way you can keep in touch with them when I'm not around."

"Are you sure?" Marlissa asked.

"Everyone has one these days, even kids!" he chuckled. "In fact, if you don't have one people look at you funny."

"Oh..." she wondered. "So what do people talk about so much they need a mobile telephone for?"

"First of all, we call them 'cell phones' here in the States whereas the Brits and Aussies call them 'mobile phones,'" Ryan replied, explaining the modern colloquialisms that she never heard of since her last summoning decades earlier. "And actually, people don't talk much on their phones theses days --it's mostly text messaging, posting on social media, and watching cat videos."

"Cat videos?"

"Yeah, people post dumb videos of their cats on YouTube," he answered, fetching out his smartphone from his back jean pocket and opening up the YouTube app to show his wife a video of cat playing on a synthesizer.

"It is like a television on your telephone!" she gasped, amazed how a bored-looking cat could play so well without fingers.

"You'll probably be addicted to your phone once you have one," he laughed. "You'll be taking selfies all day!"

"Selfies?"

Ryan pulled her aside to avoid blocking the other pedestrians and held out his phone to snap a photo. "Smile!"

Marlissa did not understand what he was doing but smiled directly at his phone. She gasped when he showed her the photo. "Where is the camera?" she asked, staring at the flat screen.

"It's that little lens," he answered.

"This is magic!"

"No, it's just technology," he chuckled. "Arthur C. Clarke said, 'Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.'"

"Everyone has one?" she wondered, looking up to see a lot of the pedestrians walking around with smartphones in their hands.

Ryan nodded and took her hand with his to continue leading her to a phone store.
