Everything is Ready
“I never knew this place existed!” Becca said.
Marcy and her were standing in a small greenhouse the size of a maintenance shed. The small building, located towards the back of the nursery, contained a variety of lush flowers and ferns filling every shelf.
“Yup! It’s kind of my little secret! Mr. Hauser bought it to raise rare plants in, but it never really worked out. He basically lets me raise whatever I want in here.”
Becca sniffed a gorgeous pink rose, relishing its soft, luxurious scent.
“Have I told you that you’re amazing?”
“Aww, you’re the best,” Marcy said. “Well, I think I’ve got everything set up.”
Becca came over and looked at Marcy’s work. There were six small pots of soil on the counter Marcy had cleared off. Each pot had slightly different colored soil and a label with specific information.
“Why are they different?”
“Well, I don’t know what they are, so they might require different conditions to grow. You know, it’s weird. I’m usually pretty good at identifying seeds by sight. I am botanist after all. I don’t recognize these at all. Hopefully we’ll get something to peak out.”
Becca picked up the remaining packet of seeds and peered inside. There were still over a dozen seeds left over.
“So it’s basically a mystery plant?” She asked.
“Pretty much!”
Marcy grabbed a small, hand painted watering-can and started to spritz the pots carefully. For some, she applied a large amount of water and others she only spared a few droplets. It was incredible seeing just how meticulous the woman could be. Becca found herself blushing with admiration.
“So they’re good to go, Marcy?”
“Yeah, I think so.”
Marcy looked at the old digital wristwatch she kept and sighed.
“It looks like we just got off the clock.”
“Sweet! I’ve got the day off tomorrow and I cannot wait!”
“Sounds nice,” Marcy said.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to make you feel bad.”
“Not at all! I’m just bummed I won’t have your company tomorrow. You really make things go by a lot faster.”
“Ditto! Well I’m gonna head out. You coming too?”
Marcy looked the plants over carefully and shook her head.
“You go on ahead. I think I want a little extra time. I’m still stuck in my head from all that stuff earlier.”
“Okay. Well don’t let yourself get down too much. See you girly!”
“See you later!”
Becca skipped out of the small greenhouse heading towards the parking lot. She felt free and a live, the weight of the workday lifted off her shoulders. She didn’t notice the eyes watching her carefully.
She was gone by the time three figures moved in on the small greenhouse.
