Chapter 18 by brevdravis brevdravis

Should I tell her the truth about my job?

Might as well.

"I walk a lot at my job. I'm really just a glorified gofer," I shrugged and reached for a sip of water.

"So, you really just spend a long time pretending to work and praying that nobody notices that you're just doing your dailies." Kaila snickered.

"Pretty much," I nodded. "But it gives me something to do so I'm not just staring at four walls every day."

"I at least like the gals I work with, " Kaila grinned. "Two of us are actually college professors, but do the music thing because they can't get actual professor status, so moonlighting. "

"Wait, that totally sounds like an adventure novel. College Professor who moonlights in a band and secretly is a badass adventuring mercenary." I grinned.

"Oooh, that'd be fun. But to do the rule sixty three'd Indy she'd totally have to be sleeping with half the hot guys in her class." Kaila grinned.

"Aaaand, I better stop because that dances right on the edge of what I know is ok..." I demurred.

"Oh, so you don't want me to invite you back to my place to see an awesome robot **** parrot," Kaila rolled her eyes theatrically. "Because I know for a fact that is more fun than staring at four walls. I mean, you got anything else going on? Apart from trying to avoid miss slash fic photographer at the shindig?"

That girl... ugh. I shuddered at the image of the large woman who had been trying to get every cosplaying male to make out with every other cosplaying male on camera. What was worse was she had a rather large following, and as a result refusing was seen as a social faux pax.

"I didn't say that." I hastily argued. "I just, well, I don't know if I've got another couple hours of energy left to watch a show."

"So, we watch it when we wake up." Kaila laughed. "I mean, have you got plans for tomorrow, because I'm totally skipping day 3. So done with being asked to donate to the cause de jour."

There it was. That was beyond obvious. I rapidly signaled the waiter with a hurried "Check, please!" When he returned to the table with the check I was in shock. The price seemed to have been at least a third higher than I had remembered things costing. Course it had been almost two years since I'd bought a chain restaurant meal in the states, but still. I had enough to cover the cost, barely, but that completely ate up my cab fee and my lunch money for the next week.

"You really need to see your face right now." Kaila snickered as she dug in her purse. It only took a moment for her to come back with a handful of silver coins. "I have to admit that I've never gone out with somebody who had to borrow tip money before."

"Sorry, just wasn't expecting a chain restaurant to cost so much." I mumbled. "Wait, Don't tell me. Don't apologize."

"Right. Work in progress, I can deal with it." Kaila smiled. She piled the coins in the middle of the table, starting with the largest and ending with a few dimes sitting on one copper piece.

A quick walk through a parking garage
