Mike's Apartment

"How close is your place, Mike?"

"Just a couple blocks down the road." For now, I think. Who knows where I'm going to wind up. The landlord was a constant pain in the ass, but the location was fantastic. I'm definitely going to miss that apartment.

"Then let's go to your place. Mine is on the far other side of the park. And my boyfriend might be there. Oops, hold on, my shoe's strap has come undone.

The casual way she mentioned her boyfriend, almost as an afterthought stopped me dead in my tracks.

"Boyfriend?"

"Yeah, I've been with Bill for a couple years now, but lately I've been...I don't know. Reevaluating our relationship?"

::gulp:: "Lately? Like what, this past month?"

Janet paused as she opened the passenger door to my car. "No, more like the past hour or so. I was expecting him to propose soon, and I was definitely looking forward to it. But now, he seems...lacking? I guess. It's weird, right?"

Weird indeed. The ride to my apartment building was a quiet one. Janet seemed to be mulling over her relationship with Bill, I was trying to figure out what this all meant for me. By the time I pulled into my parking spot, I had made a couple decisions.
