Chapter 12

Balls hurt. What now?
Another English class.
Again, English class goes smoothly with Ms. Owens, but it’s hard to concentrate through the excruciating pain. Olivia, Lilian and Jessica are in this class, too, and the former two have to hold their laughter as they look at you holding the pain. Fortunately, Ms. Owens calls them out, saying that if they want to laugh they can do it outside. That makes them stop.
When class is over, you make sure everyone leaves first to avoid bumping into anyone, specially the three she-devils.
As you’re about to exit the classroom, Ms. Owens calls you to talk. You stand in front of her desk as she sits on her chair.
“Mr. Walker, please tell me it’s not true you’re living in an old storage shed.”
Oh, she found out already?
“How did you…”
“Ms. Campbell called me yesterday to ask if I knew about it. Of course, I didn’t, which is why I’m trying to confirm it with you.” She says. “So, is it true?”
“It’s… the room the school assigned me.” You admit.
Ms. Owens sighs heavily and her shoulders drop slightly.
“So it’s true. Well, then my respect for you has risen, Mr. Walker. Despite your living conditions, you’re still able to hand quality assignments a week before the deadline.”
And three others, but you don’t say that, accepting the praise.
“You mean you read it already?” You ask, surprised.
“Very few students send their work before the deadline, even less a whole week in advance. I had time, so I read it. You have a perfect mark, Mr. Walker. There are mistakes still, but they do not take away from the quality of your arguments. I will send you a revision in the following days. Make sure you don’t make the same mistakes next time.”
“Thank you, Ms. Owens.” You answer.
“Still, I’m worried about your living conditions. Would you take me to your… house during lunch hours? I wish to confirm its state. I’m told it's close, so it shouldn’t take long.”
“I…” You hesitate, not really knowing why. You feel like it’s a mix between shame and not wanting to be pitied, but really, at this point you should take all the help you can get. “Yes, of course.”
“Thank you.”
What happens now?
