Buffy confronts her archnemes -- er, the head bad person

"It's you," Buffy said. "But I thought --"

"I know what you thought," said the woman in the doorway.

As Buffy watched, the woman's figure morphed from that of Dr. Dana Scully to that of a nurse to that of Joyce Summers to finally a form that Buffy had seen all too often outside the mental hospital. "I thought you would prove a bigger challenge, Buffy, but it seems that you're not exactly the brains of your little band of vampire killers. I played you like a harp and even when I gave you clues, it still took you almost forever to figure things out. It's just as well I kept you in here; I'm beginning to think you'd never survive outside of captivity."

"Then why not kill me then, Drusilla?" asked Buffy. "You've been trying to all these years. Why not now that you have me at your mercy?"

"Because right now killing you is the last thing I want to do," said Drusilla. "The last time you allegedly died, Kendra came to Sunnydale. And when I killed Kendra, your friend Faith showed up just a few months later. I might not be the brightest woman of my generation but even I can recognize a pattern. Kill you and I have to deal with yet another vampire slayer in the near future. But keep you alive and the other slayer will never come."

"So that's all this is?" asked Buffy. "Keeping me alive?"

"Well, there was the added bonus of seeing if I could drive you crazy," said Drusilla. "A girl my age has to have a little fun every so often."

Buffy tried to stand up but found that her legs buckled under her.

Drusilla just smiled and said, "You've been horizontal for quite a few days. Even Slayer strength takes a while to compensate for the muscular atrophy that sets in during that period. And the **** we've been giving you don't exactly encourage Slayer strength."

"Why then the **** nudity?" asked Buffy.

"Why not?" asked Drusilla. "Okay, you probably deserve a more serious answer than that. So I'll give you one. Would you give a wolf clothes? Or a man-eating lion? Or a bear? Or a tiger? No? Because in my mind, that's exactly what you are -- a vicious wild animal that deserves to be kept in a cage for the rest of its days. And thanks to your home state's mental health system, I have you in such a cage. And you aren't ever getting out as long as you live -- and I can make you live a long time. Any more questions?"
