Chapter 28

What's next?
Work gets interesting
Evelyn walked around the Oxford Country Club for about the millionth time that night, having run out of things to talk with Darren, the tub of lard who was her partner. She figured if she was going to be doing nothing, she may as well walk around listening to her favorite metal tunes as she gets in some cardio. As she lost count of the laps she did, she began to entertain Spencer's idea of a career change more and more.
As she made her million-and-one lap around the building, she heard the distant cry of a car alarm. Her hand ripped out her headphones and then reached for her Glock. She turned her head to see Darren trying his best to run. She moved towards the car park, seeing the flashing lights of a vehicle smashed up against hers. Before moving forward, she activated the gun-mounted light, illuminating the car.
Inside, she saw a woman in the passenger seat, her face buried in an airbag. Putting her gun at a low-ready, Evelyn turned to Darren. "Call for an EMT."
"O...okay."
Evelyn then pulled out her flashlight, not wanting to point her gun at two people who'd just had an accident. Still, she wondered why someone would be around here at this time of night. Shinning the light on the car, she saw no additional movement, so she decided to move forward with caution. As she got closer, she saw the driver was also lying face first. Both were still breathing, but weren't moving around. The man looked old enough to be the woman's father, but Evelyn guessed that she was a concubine that he was trying to hide.
"What's going on?" Darren called out.
"We've got two injured."
Evelyn looked closer at the two who both remain seated. The woman looked to Evelyn. "I....its so bright here..."
She was drunk, and Evelyn assumed that the driver was too. She looked for any major injuries, but only saw cuts, scrapes and bruises, so she decided to leave them where they were and wait for EMTs. As she waited, she checked the damage to her car, finding that her rear left corner of her car was now a crumpled mess. She had her doubts it'd be worth getting the car fixed.
Next, Evelyn pulled out her phone and called Spencer.
"Uhh... Evelyn?"
"Hey. I'm sorry to call you at this hour but some asshole's crashed into my car, and I'm gonna need a ride."
"Oh my God, you okay?"
"Yeah. Yeah I'm fine. I was no where near the accident when it happened."
Spencer sighed with relief, having for a moment relived the call he got on that fateful night when Kirstin was taken away from him. "Well, could you give me half an hour to coffee up?"
"Make it an hour. I'll probably have to give a statement and all that shit."
"Got it."
Spencer pulled up at the car park, having passed the two ambulances. Evelyn walked over to him and said "Hey Spence."
"So, you good?"
"Yeah, shift change."
"Well, I've got some coffee in the car for you."
"You're a fucking saint."
Evelyn sat in the car, and grabbed Spencer's insulated mug. As Spencer put his SUV in gear, he asked "So how's your car?"
"Write off most likely."
"Shit..."
"Tell me about it."
"Well, I'm always available if you need me."
"Thanks Spence."
"Do you want me to do the school run with your boys?"
"Eh, I don't think Clay would trust you that much with the boys yet."
"That's fair. I wouldn't trust Amy with anyone I'd only just met."
Evelyn nodded.
"I don't mean to be rude, but do you have the money to buy a car?"
"Uhhh fuck... not really."
"I'd be happy to help you with that Evelyn."
"I'll keep it in mind."
"I'm serious Evie. You do need a car."
"I know Spence, okay?" Evelyn barked, before taking a deep breath. "Sorry that was a little shitty."
"It's okay. You have every right to be pissed off right now."
"Yeah. At least the fucking asshole didn't kill anyone getting here." Those words sent chills down Spencer's spine, again reminding him of Kirstin.
"He a club member?"
"Yeah. With a mistress in tow."
"They gonna be okay?"
"Most likely. Although the guy's most likely going to have one hell of a divorce if he's married."
Spencer chuckled. "Guess he deserves it."
"Maybe if I'm lucky he'll pay out some hush money. If it's enough I might be able to get something flash like this."
Eventually Spencer arrived at Evelyn's house, where he said "So you wanna go to bed?"
"Nah... I'm too wired. Plus you just gave me a serious caffeine boost. Wanna come in?"
"Of course."
How do Spencer and Evelyn spend the morning?
