What happened on the drive home?
They stop to reminisce
"Sorry about my wife. Um, we had a..an argument tonight," Mr. Fraser said as he started the car. "She wasn't mad at you, she was just...mad."
"It's alright," Brenda replied. "I'm sorry you had a fight."
"We seem to have a lot of them these days," he sighed. "I guess things change with time. Sorry she was bitchy to you."
"It's alright Mr. Fraser. I'm a big girl. My feelings aren't hurt."
"I'm glad. You're such a sweetheart, coming on short notice and you're so patient with the boys. I know they can be a handful sometimes."
"They're fine," Brenda lied, suppressing her feelings about the kids. "They were very well behaved tonight."
"I'm glad. Glad you didn't have any difficulties with them." He drove in silence for a while, then turned to look at her. "You're easy to talk to Brenda. I appreciate it."
Brenda gave him a smile and a curious look. "You're easy to talk to too, Mr. Fraser. You're always so nice."
"That's very sweet Brenda. Thank you." He lapsed into silence again, seeming to be lost in thought. After a moment he turned to her. "I want to show you something. Do you mind a short detour before I take you home? It won't take long."
Brenda paused a moment before answering, unsure where this was going. But then she nodded and smiled as she agreed. Mr. Fraser smiled back and turned off the road, heading towards a city park. Once there he parked the car and shut off the engine, nodding out through the window towards the small lake that glittered in the moonlight.
"It's stopped raining. Lets get out and walk."
Brenda nodded and got out of the car, the two of them walking down the path to the lake.
"What are you going to show me," she asked. "I've been here before."
"I know. I just wanted to show you the lake in the moonlight. I love the way the light reflects on the water when it peeks between the clouds. It's always so pretty and it has such great memories. I proposed to Mrs. Fraser here. Things were so much different then, so much better. At least the prettiness of this place hasn't changed. Even if the rest of it has gone to...gone downhill."
Brenda felt a twinge of compassion for the older man as he looked out at the placid water. She could see the forlorn disappointment in his face as he thought of a time gone by and without thinking, she reached out and squeezed his hand, murmuring reassurance. He turned towards her, a gentle smile on his face, and in that moment there was a crash of thunder, and the clouds opened with a deluge of rain.
