Chapter 5 by TheFallacyGuy TheFallacyGuy

Are you cool with starting infiltrating here?

Yeah, sure, why not?

Aaah France. Home of baguettes, noir, modern art, and surrendering to the British. Where the feet are beautiful and free, and the movies completely unintelligible and moderately pornographic. Well, that would be modern France, you're in the country side staring into a quaint little village circa 1750. It looks fairly sanitary, buzzing, independent, and whimsical despite having a population of what you estimate to be about only a hundred inhabitants. Having a hundred cowering Frenchmen might seem like not worth the effort, but it beats whatever you've got going on currently. The people here might have lived in a simpler time, but they are all worth something in their own right. There are only hard-working people here, and that is useful.

Your teleporter places you towards the outskirts of the town. You are holo-disguised as a merchant traveling to set up shop, and maybe, if you like the place enough, buy some property here. Yes, having a base of operation would certainly be a good place to start. You find the nearest land jobber, and you negotiate a contract. It will take some time to find some property, but there is an inn you can hang around in for pretty cheap.

So, you have a base of operations in the works, while now having a temporary base. You probably shouldn't teleport the Neuro-Shifterâ„¢ just yet, as you wouldn't have a proper way of moving it from the inn to your property. Instead, it's time for some recon. You need to establish three things.

  1. Who are the authorities and the heroes of this world? And how do you prevent them for interfering with your work?
  2. What are the best way to rise up the ranks here? What does the public react to?
  3. You need a henchthey. An accomplice. Someone who is just as willing to exploit people for power as you are.

The local pub is probably the best way to get people talking. You stroll around town, looking at the various shops and people until evening arrives. Then you find the pub.

The pub sign is swinging in the spring breeze. "Le Pub" it reads. Genius marketing. You swing the door open and you are faced with a quite comfy and homely tavern-like interior. Le Pub is absolutely buzzing with activities of rugged men relaxing after a hard day's work and cute waitresses servicing them. No doubt that this place is going to be key to your operations. You've found tactical locations for your Clobots surrounding the tavern in case things go south.

An extra-ordinarily burly guy is the center of attention for almost everyone, even having his own big armchair. He is tall, strong, with long black hair tied in a yellow band. He has a goofy-looking blunderbuss, which seems to not be afraid of pointing at people with. There is no doubt that this guy is important around these parts. Judging by his clothes and his weaponry, he is most likely a hunter, and very revered around this village. He is laughing about a beast of some sort. Probably a bigger than average wolf. Maybe a bear.

Cocky attitude, handsome, bulky, and talking about monsters. This guy is most likely a hero of this world. You lean in to have a conversation with the hunter.

"Excuse me, sir." you say trying to sound humble: "I am new in this town. Of what Beast are you speaking?"

"Why, the Beast of the old castle." the man's voice booms in the big hall: "It has enslaved a woman of our town. At least that's if you believe her crazy old father Maurice." Laughter once again echoes in the tavern, and you fake a smile, but you are not so certain that the story is untrue. You've felt a weird presence ever since you saw the screens displaying the town back at HQ.

This beast would be useful to have on your side. A dangerous feral creature would be quite intimidating. It might even have human sentience and intellect. You must infiltrate this castle and check things out for yourself. But how? You could sneak in via the side. It's a bit risky, but it will allow you to make assessments of this beast without having to interact with anybody. You wonder if the beast lives alone or if there are others helping it in holding the woman hostage. You could also just knock on the door and talk to it. Of course, you will reveal yourself right off the bat, immediately endangering yourself, but the beast might be negotiable, and if it is as evil as it seems, it might agree to help you in your quest. Not to mention that if the beast caught you sneaking in, it will probably be a less favourable outcome. There are pros and cons to both approaches.

How will you infiltrate the castle?
