Chapter 28 by Cantalope Cantalope

Fight or Flight?

Either way, Sabine is about to get company.

You lean heavily on the desk, your head beginning to ache from the dilemma you'd been presented with. This degree of decision making, especially with stakes so incredibly high, was not your strong suite. For your entire life everything had always been easy, the hardest decision you'd thought you'd made up till now was deciding to diverge from Ivona for the life of a Paladin. In the worst scenarios you always felt confident that The Burning Rose was there and would guide you down the right path. Now? You weren't so sure.

You close and heft the book, tossing a satchel around your shoulders and slipping it inside. You'd need it one way or the other to convince the other Abbey's. If they believed you at all. You shudder as you recall your welcome to Sea Haven. The Goddess' presence intensifies comfortingly and you feel fortified, at least for the moment. You glance back the way you came, the tiny passages opening in from the ceiling were out of reach even if you stood on the bookshelves. You needed to find another way out. Maybe in the meantime you would find either the sword or Janine. The situation was so dire at this point that you would be lucky to escape with even one.

With a heavy sigh, you start towards the door, managing a total of two steps before freezing as you hear scrabbling above you. A vibrantly pink imp drops out of the ceiling, landing with a graceless thump on the desk. It grins stupidly at you before seeming to gather its wits, "You supposed to be in fucking pens." It doesn't sound like an order, more just confused, but even this fine specimen of an imp wouldn't stay that way for long.

What's next?
