As the masked psycho came closer, Savannah backed away from him. Passing Brooke's desk, she grabbed the closest thing she could see, Brooke's laptop. She snatched it up, causing Brooke's severed head to fly off and bounce in a corner of the room.
Savannah didn't see it happen: all her attention was focused on the machete in front of her. Her attacker raised his machete, then swung downwards. As he did so, Savannah brought the laptop up, holding it in front of her like a shield. The machete hit the laptop with a thunk, and cut into it, but not through it. Savannah tugged, and the machete came out of the masked figure's hands.
Savannah smacked the masked figure in the side of its head with the laptop, pushed it into the desk, then ran past it, out the door and into the hall.
Savannah ran blindly along the hallway and down the stairs to the ground floor. She ran along the hallway until she came to the small bathroom next to the kitchen. This door, she remembered, was unlocked. She went into the bathroom and locked the door.
Keeping the light off, Savannah felt around with her hands until she located the shower. She slipped into this, pulled the curtain shut, and sat down, trying to make herself as small as possible. She swallowed, and then concentrated on bringing her gaspy breathing under control.
Savannah knew she wasn't safe here, that this was only a temporary refuge. She didn't think it would take her attacker long to find her. The locked door was little protection, either. A few hard blows with the machete would smash it to splinters. And there was no other way out of this room.
She couldn't stay here.
But what should she do? The kitchen was next door, and there might be a knife or other weapon there. On the other hand, her best move might be to just try to leave by the closest door.
Whichever option she chose, she would have to decide quickly.
