Did Miss Wormwood bite you?

"Oh," Prefect Ish says. "I had a question before I go, you don't have to answer it if it's too personal."

"Oh?" you say.

"Did Miss Wormwood, ah, bite you? I mean, not just for immunizations," she asks. Her cheeks look a little pink.

"Oh, why?" you ask.

"Well," she says. "She and I, ah, well, I would go to visit her, and she used to bite me. For sex? But I can't do it any more. I started fainting. She said it might kill me."

You nod. "Yes," you say. "She started hinting around. So I asked her to." Your face feels warm. "She did."

Ish dabs at a tear on her cheek. "I miss it so much," she says. "It felt so good. I hope you don't have any trouble."

Miss Wormwood had had to revive you with artificial respiration. So perhaps you had some of the same trouble that Ishtar Stellaris did.

"Just a little," you say.

Your bites sting, reminding you. The ones in your neck and your navel throb. We must do this again, Golondrina, Miss Wormwood had said. But how long would you last?

Ish sighs. "You don't know how glad I am to hear that," she says. "I'm glad I'm not the only one. I heard there was some other girl in Minerval, but I never found out who it was. I...you'll love it, I'm sure." Her cheeks are more pink, now. "Just take care. She could kill you. There was some boy, I don't know, ten years ago? From House Beavertail. He died from her venom when she took him to bed."

You nod, acknowledging the Prefect's warning. "Thank you," you say.

"I hope you like it here," Ish says.

She slips out the door before you can say anything.

The fatigue of the day catches up with you and you lie down to sleep before you have to rise for the evening meal.
