Tim's Bithday Blues

“Wait it’s my birthday?” Tim asked with a mixture of shock and confusion. How could he forget he turned 18 today. “I guess I just forgot without Grandpa here.” Tim’s Grandpa Jim was the first of his adopted family to welcome him and despite not being blood it was obvious Tim was his favorite grandchild. Tim’s face fell as he remembered the cause of his depression. One year before he was out celebrating with his grandpa a tradition they had since he was five. They had breakfast at his grandpa’s favorite diner and were about to head to the park across from it. As they were walking a truck came barreling down the street showing no sign of stopping. The next thing Tim saw was the heart monitor. It was a hit and run the driver was never caught and grandpa died shielding his grandson. Tim had hit his head hard and spent three months in a coma missing the funeral which broke his heart even further. Since the accident Tim had grown increasingly depressed and a nearly constant migraine.

Noticing Tim’s sudden change in mood both Barbara and Cass took hold of him. “Hey no crying grandpa wouldn’t want that.” said Barbara in a soft caring tone. “Yeah if he saw that he’d call you wuss and to suck it up.” Cass said in a joking tone. Causing a laugh from all three. Tim knew they were right and willed himself just for a while to feel normal if only for the day. “Okay let’s go or I’m gonna be late.” Tim stated with a sincere smile for the first time in a long time.

School was a blur thankfully it was as if all the bullies were sick or just didn’t feel like messing with Tim today. After school Tim headed straight home his depression beginning to resurface. Once home Tim immediately went to playing his games. His games and stories put him in a different world one where he had power and could protect the people he cared about. While observing his best character an Assassin/Thief in Skyrim, he hears a knock on his door.
