Chapter 4 by ErisAphrodite ErisAphrodite

Does Orus accept the invitation?

No.

It would be foolish to enter the tower at the whim of its mistress. No, Orus was not a fool. He preferred staying outside, on the open plains.

“I'll have to decline your offer, Good Lady,” he said. “If you have anything useful to tell me, I'll hear it from here. I have a job to do, and cannot waste time.”

The woman's bottom lip slid into a slight pout, though her eyes held more than simple disappointment. “Understandable, of course,” she said, her posture shifting as she laid her arm across her slender waist to grasp her elbow. “I'm afraid all I can tell you is that I happened to see a lone traveler pass by a day ago, who might have been the girl you seek. They had no apparent interest in me or my home, but simply wandered across the plain toward that mountain in the east. I cannot say for certain what they looked like, though.” Her eyes held his for a moment, and in that look he felt himself believing her.

Orus nodded. “My thanks,” he said before turning away, toward the mountain. He walked a time more, up the rising plains and into the hills that stood sparse of trees and riddled with boulders. He thought once more of his quest, and though he was sure the Baron said his daughter went to the tower, nobody really knew whether or not she entered it. Where else she could have gone was a mystery, but the woman in black seemed so trustworthy with what she said...

There was a modest trail in the mouth of a valley that ran between the largest hills, one that forked into two separate roads not far down. The right path led up higher into the mountains, and the left proceeded further into the small valley.

Which path did Orus take?
