Chapter 11

After that bra? Seek ? Or is pool time over?
Johanna cuts her losses.
Johanna rolled her eyes and turned away from Bone, quickly pulling herself out of the pool. The bra was probably weighted with a stone, knowing the pirate, and she was unlikely to see it again. Besides, the lack of a bra would be a constant, if uncomfortable, reminder that she couldn’t let her guard down around the other captain. His intentions were clear, as was her own dwindling willpower. She toweled herself off with the coat before dropping it on top of Bone’s clothing, before pulling on her pants and shirt again. Her wet hair actually felt quite nice against her neck, keeping the sun’s heat at bay, if only for a short while. She waited until Bone pulled himself out of the pool and got dressed as well before walking along the edge of the clearing, looking down on the rest of the island.
She didn’t know what she expected to see from up here. The island was unsettled, as best she could tell, and was covered almost entirely by the dense jungle. She could trace the path they had taken up the mountain, could see out where a stream emerged from the mountain, before snaking its way down into an eventual waterfall and a small pool. There were a few rock formations scattered throughout the jungle, which could hide natural caves or tunnels. Tomorrow she might head towards the waterfall and pool, or one of the rock formations, but it was already well past noon today, and they should probably return to their lean-to for the night.
She was spending a moment to see if there was a more efficient way down the mountain than just retracing the path they had taken up, when she felt a familiar form, and a familiar hardness, press against her back. She didn’t give Bone time to get up to anything this time, though, shoving an elbow into his stomach and forcing him off of her. “I’m heading back down. Don’t press your luck.” With that, she set off, back through the jungle.
Johanna kept a brisk pace back down the mountain, ignoring Bone’s attempts to verbally provoke her. She really couldn’t blame him for stealing her bra and sinking it, the whole thing was her fault for getting in the pool with him in the first place. Still, she could be upset at him, and she was considering making him sleep outside the tent tonight when Bone suddenly appeared in front of her, grasping her shoulders with his large hands and forcing her to deal with him.
Johanna huffed at the large man. “What now, Bone?” The pirate, for once, wasn’t smiling, which Johanna took as a small victory. He made sure he had her full attention before speaking. “Look, love, I’m sorry. It’s been months since I’ve been with a woman, and longer since I’ve been with one as beautiful as you.” Johanna narrowed her eyes, determined not to be swayed by a fake apology and a few simple compliments. Bone continued, “I let my lusts get the better of me. On my honor, I won’t do anything more unless you want me to.” Johanna waited a few seconds before replying. “Are you done? It’s going to be dark before we get back at this rate.” The large man let out a sigh and released her, letting Johanna elbow her way past him.
Bone was a good actor, Johanna had to admit. His apology almost sounded sincere, and she was certain that he wouldn’t, in fact, make another advance on her… at least for a few hours. Combined with the fact that he was good-looking, powerful, and persistent, and a lesser woman would have definitely caved in to his sexual advances by this point. But Johanna was not a lesser woman, and she reassured herself that she could last at least another day before giving in to him.
Before she had time to realize the implications of this thought, though, Johanna spotted their little lean-to from the night before, and let out a sigh of relief. She could see the sun beginning to set behind the treeline, and… were those storm clouds beginning to move back in? “Dammit,” She remarked aloud, “Does it rain every night here?” Bone appeared beside her, squinting out at the horizon before answering her rhetorical question. “So far. Three nights, three storms.”
Johanna muttered another curse under her breath before ducking into their primitive shelter. They had gathered and eaten a variety of nuts and berries as they walked, and drinking water clearly wasn’t a problem, between the spring, streams, and gods-damned rain. If they couldn’t find any natural shelter tomorrow, then constructing something a little more permanent would be an appropriate next step. As Bone entered the shelter behind her, she realized that they hadn’t seen anything resembling dry, burnable wood on their trek, which meant their best chance at staying warm was, once again, sleeping next to each other. On some level, Johanna knew that she’d end up sleeping next to the large man again, but the fact that she didn’t really have a choice in the matter was somewhat upsetting.
She shared her thoughts about what they had learned today with Bone, more to hear it out loud than to get his opinion on the matter. Bone was still trying to regain her favor, of course, so his opinion was “Whatever you think is best,” which Johanna could live with. Soon enough, she heard the telltale pitter-patter of rain, and, early though it may be, there was little else to do tonight other than sleep. Before she could even say as much, Bone had whipped off his coat, which was really her coat, and was lying back on ground. He didn’t say anything to Johanna, but as she settled down next to him, adjusting the coat so that it covered both of their bodies, she saw that he was smiling again, relaxing with his hands behind his head. Johanna gave one last, irritated sigh before closing her eyes, hoping that her dreams would be less troublesome tonight.
An uneventful night? More dreams?
