Chapter 27 by elmerstories elmerstories

Who is this siren?

A prisoner...a goddess? Both?

While many would be entranced by this fascinating girl who lives in water, the drow snaps back to the reality of the mountain. For someone that could whisper to the minotaur and unbind him in seconds, it only affirms that she's not someone to be trifled with. Moreover, there could be only one being that could have completely unchained Djarrus...one that could equally bind him again: a mistress.

Pulling out both of her knives that were owned by the dead ranger's utility they took, she takes a step back, her weapons out in defensive form. The minotaur is surprised by the drow's wariness and the knives' pointed at him.

You are surprised as well, but you can understand the situation and why your companion drow is so defensive now. You follow her steps back and narrow your eyes at Djarrus.

"Djarrus...this girl is trouble. If she's truly unbound you, then she could easily use your name to kill both of us."

Djarrus seems to understand your caution now. He gives a low hum and although now you can't see the siren since you've backed away, he turns his head as he receives more messages from her.

"She says...if that were true, you would already be attacked."

Despite the siren's reasoning, there is no doubt that the minotaur is already within her reach. You aren't able to understand it, but you assume that being in the water is the same as being within reach of this water girl. For all you know, she might be trying to lead you in.

"We need to leave, Daeel," Nathraena states, ignoring any excuse. She's gone through too much to begin to trust a stranger. She hasn't even completely trusted the minotaur due to his binding to this mysterious mistress of his. The only reconcile was that he gave away his true name and was unwilling to fight, but now that he is supposedly unbound, it makes her all the warier.

Although you agree with Nathraena's worries to a certain extent, you also don't want to leave Djarrus behind. This might be a chance to prove whether the siren means harm or not.

"Wait. Djarrus, if she truly means no harm, then she'll leave us alone and perhaps tell us how to move forward safely within the mountain."

Djarrus nods as he begins to hear the siren respond. He understands the wariness of the two he has traveled with and closes his eyes as the siren explains herself. It appears that he only has the sort of high listening for him to hear someone of a siren. Even someone like Nathraena couldn't catch her practically silent speech.

"That...is not possible. The only path is the way to stairs and...there are lizards that have made their home this deep in the mountain. They apparently worship her as some sort of goddess and thanks to that, she cannot leave. They even built this altar for her."

You furrow your eyebrows. Even as badly as Nathraena wanted to leave, she couldn't ignore the prospect of lizards in the other path. Come to think of it, shouldn't your presence already be discovered? Their sense of smell is very strong and after the amount of struggle you've been through, you would think that your current party would be discovered. You convey your doubts.

"Then wouldn't they have already discovered us?"

"Not immediately since this chamber exhibits its own smell that they've become used to, but there isn't much time before one of them starts to wander in here. I understand your hesitation and distrust human; however, there is not a lot of time or places to hide. At the very least, she can help us recover."

Djarrus comes to explain on his own the siren's current predicament. Seeing how you and Nathraena are in a dangerous corner, it's obvious that you need to make a choice.

"Couldn't she just kill them all?"

Djarrus hums as he hears the siren answer.

"They haven't attempted to harm her, so she wishes not to kill if possible."

What the fuck? You somehow can't believe that especially in a mountain such as this. It's kill or be killed and this siren is concerned with the livelihood of these lizards? Somehow you sense her playing tricks just to get close. Heck, for all you know, she could be whispering orders to Djarrus and telling him what to say in order to get you and the drow into her territory.

What do you do?
