Awkward, as expected

Makayla was the last to arrive at lunch. She was glad that everyone didn't stop and stare like she feared. The first thing she noticed was that the geography had changed. Alex was sitting with Sayen and Bianca. Gaby was sitting with Brian, Erik and Pitt. And, at her normal table it was just Axe and Gina. The reality of her decision had just slapped her in the face.

Originally Gina had traded places with Alex was so she could offer support to Makayla, but now she was distracted. She had found another note just before lunch.

The note was obviously more sexual than the last one but what really upset her was the timing. The note hadn't appeared first thing in he morning like the last one, but after Alex had returned. And now he had broken up with his girlfriend. She had to figure out how to confront him. She had purposely sat her and Axe in a way that Makayla would have her back to the other tables. It also positioned her to be able to see Alex. She looked over at him sitting quietly as Bianca and Sayen chatted away. For a moment her mind drifted about how handsome he was... "Gina?" Makayla quietly asked.

Gina looked to her.

"Would it be okay if I switched rooms and stayed with one of the freshman orientation crew?"

"Well, it's not ideal, but if you feel it will help," Gina responded.

Alex wasn't interested much in his food and even less interested in the conversation. He liked Sayen, but had always been somewhat shy around Bianca. He looked up at Makalya and started thinking about how messed up this was.

"Alex... ALEX!" Bianca said trying to get his attention.

"Oh, I'm sorry..." he quietly replied.

"Would you run some errands with me after lunch? I have to take some paperwork over to the Ranger Station and stop by the trading post."

"Yeah, sure," he replied.

Gina tapped on Bianca's shoulder.

"Do you want to make the announcement?" she asked.

"Yeah," Bianca said then stood up, getting the group's attention. "After all the excitement this morning, we decided to give you all the afternoon off. We are ahead of schedule and what little we need to do can be made up in the morning. So be safe, have fun and," she added turning to Alex, "Maybe stay on this side of any streams or rivers."

The whole group laughed with the exception of Makayla. Alex smiled for a second then began thinking again. Sayen looked at him and felt horrible for him.

"So since we got the afternoon off how about we head over to the lake and do some... bird watching? Erik asked.

Brian just shook his head at the euphemism.

"Yeah, sounds like fun," Brian replied. "You bring any binoculars?"

"I got 'em right here," Erik replied pointing his index and middle finger towards his eyes, then turning and pointing them at Brian. "Check out the wings on that red-tailed hottie."

"Ugh," Gaby said in disgust as she got up to take her dishes to the kitchen. As she did she looked over at Makayla and gritted her teeth.
