Chapter 18
by TMJ2008
What is it you see behind you?
A boulder flying right towards you!
You turn around in time to see a rough sphere of stone about the size of your torso flying towards your head at high speed. You curse loudly as you reflexively bring the gauntlet up between yourself and the small boulder flying at you, stone impacting with unearthly steel with a clashing sound. The **** drives your gauntleted hand backwards into your own face and sends you tumbling backwards to the ground, but you just barely manage to avoid losing your head completely to the dangerous projectile that had come from seemingly nowhere. Your head is ringing and you feel blood running down from your nose where the gauntlet smashed into it, but you are whole and able to get back to your feet quickly enough, looking for the one who had launched the boulder towards you.
You find, however, that it wasn't somebody that had thrown the stone at you, but rather the stone itself seeming to have leaped from the wall of its own volition and it is not the only one. Numerous boulders fly from the walls and ceiling, sailing through the air and meeting in the center of the chamber with hard impacts over and over again. Some of the stones fly by you and you have to duck and dodge a few more, but hitting you doesn't seem to be the aim as the boulders smash into each other and, slowly, join together to take a greater form.
A roughly humanoid shape grows from the stones smashing into each other, short sturdy legs and long arms with digits formed from hard stone. A torso that is broad and powerful with thick stone "skin" covering it completely. And then a head, or at least a square protrusion that grows from the top of the creature's torso and resembles a head without eyes, ears or mouth. The rough shape coalesces, the stone seeming to carve itself into shape until you are staring at a stone golem that is twice your height and breadth as it rises up to its full height and "looks" at you with its sightless face. You don't know how you know it's looking at you when it doesn't have eyes, but you somehow do as it regards you with a clearly hostile attention.
You swallow hard, trying to wet your suddenly dry mouth, and hold up your gauntleted hand between you and the golem. The gauntlet is, at the moment, the only weapon you have that you can wield readily and so it is what you hold up and at the read as you stare at the rock creature standing in the center of the chamber. It doesn't move or make a sound save for the sounds that come from rock shifting and brushing against itself as it "breathes" or at least makes the motion of breathing. It has not made a hostile move yet, but you also get the feeling it isn't exactly friendly from the way it held no regard for your well-being when it formed itself. Honestly, though, you don't even know if the creature is sentient or possessing of any intelligence beyond instinct.
But there's only one way to find that out and so you clear your throat and lower the gauntlet slightly as you look at it, your body still taut with tension and your expression anxious. Still, you manage to at least keep your voice steady as you call out to it. "Hail....stone creature! Can you understand me? Do you speak? What is it you want? I have no desire for conflict if we can avoid it.", you call to it, eyeing it carefully as you do to see whether or not it has a reaction...and whether or not that reaction is a hostile one or not.
How does the stone golem react to your words?
