Chapter 30 by Zingiber Zingiber

Choose one and describe the struggle and its result.

To fend off Selina, you must enter dragonform (+1 XP, CONSEQUENCE).

You dodge a bolt of magic from from the menacing enchantress's staff. You snatch out your wand, recalling your elementary lessons in magical dueling. But your inner draconic fires rumble, and you may not be able to concentrate on finesse.

With wand in hand, you deflect Selina's attacks. But she seems little disturbed, calmly pressing you with one ****, then another, pressing you back until you're backed up against a tree. The garden, so idyllic in the golden afternoon, looks threatening and full of shadows in the moonlight.

With a smile, the purple-robed witch incants, "Carcer Arborum" and tips her staff toward you. The limbs of the tree whip round and imprison you, body and arms, and wrench your wand away.

Selina starts to weave a slow enchantment. Silvery strands of magic start wrapping round you, sapping your will, chaining it to hers.

Never.

Your fiery blood courses in your veins, and you struggle in the grasp of the tree limbs. But strong as you are, you're not strong enough by yourself. There's an ache in your back, an itch. Your shoulders, elbows, knuckles. Your knees and toes. This time, you don't fight it, you let it happen.

With a convulsive shudder, the transformation erupts from within. Your mouth and nose thrust forward into a fanged snout. Your brow gains depth and ridges. Your limbs twist and harden. Claws spring from your fingers and toes. Wings sprout from your shoulders, folded tight, trapped against the tree.

Selina weaves the strands of enchantment tighter, thicker, quickening her incantation.

You exert yourself to the utmost and tear loose, the tree limbs ripping and splintering. Leaping forward, you fall upon the purple-robed witch and overbear her, knocking her to the soft grass of the moonlit Garden of Delights. Before she can wield her staff, you seize it in your mouth and wrench it from her hands.

"No!" she cries in alarm. With you holding her down at the length of your longer arms, she can't reach to pull it back.

"I'rr brkk hih!" you threaten. The wood of the staff bends in your powerful dragon-jaws.

"Don't, please, you win!" Selina pleads.


Gain +1 XP (6 XP total) and a CONSEQUENCE (Dragonform) and choose an option or suggest an alternative.

What's your next step? Some options:

  • Make a pact with Selina. You'll let her go with a promise not to harm anyone at Boarbristle, conceal her from Fergus, and she'll become your secret tutor in enchantments. Spend 5 XP to gain a FRIEND and a FAVOR. Treat Selina as of House Minerval for resolving moves. On a 10+ ENCOUNTER with Selina (+2) (+2 FRIEND, +1 CUNNING, -1 CONSEQUENCE), she will help you transform back to human form, or expend a FAVOR for her help.
  • Drive her off. Keep the staff and tell Fergus of the enchantress. On a successful ENCOUNTER (+4) (+2 FRIEND, +3 BRAVERY, -1 CONSEQUENCE), you can avoid Morgan and Fay learning your secret.
  • Break her staff. This frees Fergus, Fay, and Morgan from sleep. In addition to a CONSEQUENCE, gain an ENEMY of significant power and malice (Selina Lune).
  • Break her staff. This frees Fergus, Fay, and Morgan from sleep. In addition to a CONSEQUENCE, Selina Lune gives you a CURSE as she departs: any time you take a new CONSEQUENCE, you revert to dragonform and must GET OUT OF TROUBLE. (This will blow your cover as Dragonkin and may cause trouble at school). Take a GOAL (DILIGENCE - 2) to research how the curse may be broken.
