Chapter 16 by Godzilla87 Godzilla87

What do you do?

Let's make a move!

Lydia first saw shadows of the goblins standing over Shana. Cast onto the trees behind the ogre by the firelight. It caused her to glance over at Shana and saw she was down. The sight shocked her. This moment of hesitation was all the ogre needed. He swung his great club in a backhand at the knight. She must have seen it out of the corner of her eye. Lydia ducked down to a crouch barely in time for the club to sail harmlessly over her head.

However, she didn't have time to react to the ogre's other hand following the club. His fist caught her in the midsection. If she hadn't been wearing armor, the blow would have broken her in half. Instead, it sent her sailing through the air like a rag doll until she collided with the trunk of a tree almost 15 feet from where she had been standing. The knight slid down the trunk in a crumpled heap. Her sword and shield fell from her grip beside her body. Her head slumped against her chest. Blood matted her short hair on the right side of her head.

The blow didn't kill her or her body would have started to disappear. Somehow, she was still alive, ****, but still alive. The sight brings a smile to your face. That holy knight got what she deserved.

The only thing you wanted more than to watch that horrid knight die is to kill her yourself. One or two hits from you would probably end her life and you'd definitely level up again from all the experience. Unfortunately, if you sit there and let Lydia die or even kill her, you'll probably be killing Shana in the process by letting the goblins have their way with her. And a dead queen is not the queen for you.

There were five goblins remaining around Shana. She hung her head low as she gripped her staff. Her long red hair draped over her face blocking it from your view. She almost seemed resigned to her fate. She would respawn of course, losing some gold and experience, but she would return.

You're not going to to let that happen. There's no way you can take them all on at once though, but you have to do something or the heroines are going to die and their experience will be wasted on these other monsters. And where else would you find a priestess to Helia that can heal you so easily and make a queen worthy of your greatness.

The goblins closed their circle around Shana. One by one they raised their clubs to finish her off. One of the goblins with its back to you lifts the front of its loincloth. You can't see anything, but it must have shook its prick at Shana. The vulgar gesture made the goblins cackle with glee.

Two other goblins did the same thing inciting more laughter among themselves. They look smug, thinking they've won this battle and they can do whatever they want to poor Shana. They can violate her as many times as they want with no consequences. And once they've used up her body. They'll finish her off and take her experience to level up. The thought fills you with hate. You hate them for hurting Shana, for wanting to violate her. She will be yours. You must protect your queen.

With the fury inside you doing all your thinking, you pull out your long knife and dive through the branches toward the group of goblins seconds away from pummeling Shana to **** with their wooden clubs.

With your wings outstretched, you blindside the goblins. Shana sees you coming and tries to roll out of the way. She's makes it out of the circle of goblins, but not much further. You knock over three goblins with your inititial attack. Your wings hit two, but your body, more importantly your knife, hits one in the chest with you landing on top. The impact drove your long knife into the goblin all the way to the hilt.

You feel experience flow into you as the goblin beneath you dies. You don't even think to loot its corpse. You quickly get to your feet. The two goblins still standing are furious. With a battle cry, they charge you.

Your hands are empty. You forgot to pull your knife free from the goblin currently fading away at your feet. In a panic you flap your wings to evade the two goblins. You feel something grab your ankle. It's one of the goblins you knocked over. You can't fly away. The weight of the goblin is too much. Straining to break free you pull harder and furiously kick. The other goblin quickly grabs you other foot. It's useless. There's no escaping now.

You're out of time and out of luck. You should have just let the goblins kill Shana and kept your experience. Now if you die, you'll have to start completely over.

The two goblins tackle you and start hitting you with their clubs. The other two get up and join the beating. Your health drops quickly, but you're not giving up yet. You cover your head with your hands and try to get to your feet. Each blow knocks you back to the ground.

"Stupid beastie, trying to steal our pretties," says a chubby goblin as it steps away to admire the focused work of its comrades.

You hear some chanting coming from somewhere. Suddenly, the air feels charged around you and your three remaining attackers. The air cracks and sparks as you are engulfed in an inferno of fire along with the goblins still hitting you. The blaze misses the fourth goblin who stepped back.

Enjoying your attackers screams, you rise to your feet soaking in the fire like a fresh bath. The flames quickly rejuvenate you.

As the fire recedes, you are back at full health. You turn to see Shana still leaning on her staff looking tired, but satisfied.

The fourth goblin turns to run in a panic. The goblin throws its club down as it turns. It's run is more like a hobble with its round belly and stunted legs. There is absolutely no way you're letting that goblin get away.

You draw your throwing knife and hit the goblin square in its back. The blow knocks it down onto its stomach, but doesn't kill it. The goblin tries to pull the knife from its back, but before it can grab it the knife returns to your hand only to be thrown again. The knife hits home in the goblin's back again.

After finishing off the goblin with one last throw of your knife, you hear the familiar *ding* letting you know you have leveled up. Before you can check your stats, you hear a deep growl coming from behind you where Shana was still kneeling.

What does the growl belong to?
