Chapter 10 by HenryKajitani HenryKajitani

Is Anna's name on the paper?

Yes, she can't get out that easy

Mr. Barclay called out the name written on the sheet of paper, "Jeffrey, you are up to present!"

Anna breathed a sigh of relief. She escaped presenting in her embarrassing outfit. She sat back and waited for the last presentation of the day.

No one in the room moved.

"Jeffrey!" He called again.

Again, the room remained silent.

"Looks like he's not here." He set the paper aside. Reaching back into the hat, he pulled another slip out. This slip was a more off-white color and had notebook lines on it. Mr. Barclay paid no attention to these details as he called out the name on it, "Anna! You will be the last to present today!"

Anna's heart dropped. She had been so relieved when her name hadn't been called. There hadn't been enough time for her to prepare herself again for this. She picked up the board behind her and kept it plastered to her front as she descended the stairs. The class kept their eyes on her intently. Reaching the bottom, Anna placed the board on the table at the front of the room.

Mr. Barclay was taking a sip from his coffee mug as he looked up from his grade sheet and caught a glimpse of Anna's attire. Spitting coffee out, he exclaimed, "What are you wearing!?" Before Anna could even attempt to explain herself, he had began walking towards her, shaking his finger and lecturing her, "Young lady, this will not be tolerated. This uniform is completely against the dress code!"

Anna shyly stuck out her hand with the note.

Mr. Barclay stopped his lecturing to pluck the note from Anna's hand. He read through it with a sullen face. "This is unacceptable. It is preposterous that our esteemed principal would condone such behavior." He walked to the teacher's desk and picked up the phone and punched in the principal's number. After a few rings, the phone was picked up on the other end. Anna could only hear one side of the conversation.

Mr. Barclay spoke, "Yes, hello. I have a girl here breaking the school dress code."

"She has a note supposedly from you saying she is not to be punished for uniform infractions."

"You did!? Surely you can't be serious?"

He slammed the phone down, obviously discontent with the conversation that had just occurred. He could no longer blow the note off as fake.

After some thought, the sullen teacher spoke.

Does the teacher take matters into his own hands?
