Chapter 46 by Cantalope Cantalope

What now?

Empower your minions

It startles you as your newly created senses go dark and the seedling shrivels to dust, blowing away on a gust of wind. That was... sudden. You perform a few more tests to feel out your new abilities.

  1. Apparently you could have several seedlings active at once, the only limiting factor was your mana pool. Thanks to Absorb you could get more than a dozen out before the first shriveled up. The next major fight you were in you were going to spam the absolute shit out of this, it was like your very own plant army on demand! Of course, their usefulness was limited to their timer and their immediate area. To any major enemy they'd be a distraction and nothing more.
  2. You think you'd figured out what "almost unlimited growth" meant: you could stretch your tendrils through a huge area of the forest, directly cluing you in to everything happening for a hundred or so feet in every direction. In terms of monsters you were the largest non-boss you'd ever heard of, though most of your "size" was only length, you weren't particularly beefy.
  3. You could unleash your abilities at any part of your body but your base attacks were abysmal compared to before. Hm... Your body wasn't as robust as it used to be, you might actually need to start fighting smart again. This would take some getting use to...

Well that was fun. You'd just received an entirely new skill set for like the third time in as many days. All this excitement had your head spinning but now you needed to get down to business. You had minions, you had scope, you had power, and more than enough ingenuity to employ all three. Time to put it all to use against the enemy. Playing house with Dana had been fun but you needed to remember your purpose; you had dragged yourself out of that pit of suffering to wreak vengeance on hero-kind and that was exactly what you were going to do. Your little testing session has the spiders riveted and you can almost feel their approval vibrating off them. They respect power. Good. I'll show them plenty more. MINIONS. Your voice echoes through the woods and the spiders flatten themselves in what you assume is a bow. THE ASCENDANT HAS ARISEN. THE AGE OF MAN IS COMING TO AN END. THE AGE OF MONSTERS... HAS JUST BEGUN! A humming vibration picks up among the arachnids that you recognize as a cheer and they raise their forelimbs to you in a somewhat horrifying display. GO NOW, TAKE THESE WOODS, MAKE THEM YOUR OWN. IF A HERO SO MUCH AS STEPS UPON THIS SACRED EARTH, THEY WILL BE RENT ASUNDER! Your dramatic flair served you well as the invertebrates dispersed in a wild swarm into the woods, weaving webs, setting traps, circling through your newly claimed territory out for blood.

You doubted they'd find anything tonight, most of the heroes who came through these parts weren't confident enough to brave them in the dark. You'd have to give them more articulate orders (e.g. bring the women back here) when they calmed down but for now, let them channel that fervor. Maybe they'd fortify the area enough to make it defensible.

The cloud front from earlier darkens the moon and the scent of petrichor is carried on the wind. Finally, a little rain. You used to enjoy watching the canyon flood when you were but a wee weed fiend, all that power was inspiring even if it did occasionally sweep you away. Now you bask in the cool droplets as they begin to patter against your leaves, infusing you with a warm glow as your health regenerated. A stirring at your feet brings your attention back to your forgotten captive. Miera was still out cold but the rain and previous coating of herbal flow seemed to be sapping her heat; she was shivering. The irony of taking exposure damage from healing slime was not lost on you but at your core you are a least somewhat benevolent: you take pity. Drawing her up from the muddying earth, you surround her in the sheltering leaves of your cloak, caressing away the filth and slime as thunder cracks in the distance.
