With the meat and baked beans divided between the dishes and Shuri having poured half of the soup into the bowl, there's nothing left to do but dig in. The baked beans are almost mushy, the spam is a bit too salty for her taste, and the soup is rather thin, but it's not bad. At least she now has something to stop her stomach from growling.
It's quiet as they eat, although Shuri can hear the humming of cicadas outside. There aren't any windows in the place, so she can't see the sky outside, but a glance at the alarm clock Kayo left on top of the nightstand tells her it's twenty minutes past two. The morning had gone by uncomfortably quickly, or maybe it only seemed that way after she'd lost her map.
The map. She pauses while chewing another mouthful of ham and beans. She looks at Kayo. Maybe...
She gulps down the food. "Do you, uh." Her voice comes out more awkwardly than she'd like it to. "Do you have your map?"
Kayo looks up from the can of soup. "Yeah. Why?"
Now she sounds almost suspicious, or at least ready to be. Shuri sighs. "I lost mine earlier. Dropped it, had to make a run for it from...you know, and I didn't realize it was gone until I was already far off."
The other girl raises her eyebrows. "So what? You want mine or something?"
"Not want." Shuri corrects defensively. "I just want to <i>see</i> it. That's all."
Kayo only stares at her. "Didn't you just say you didn't want to work with me?"
"I'm not asking to work with you," Shuri grits out, keeping her voice as calm as she can. "I just want to see your map, because I don't have mine. See. Not just want."
She makes a gesture towards her eyes to emphasize her point. Kayo rolls her eyes. "Okay, okay," she mutters.
One shuffle around in her bag later, she hands her the map, and Shuri smooths it out as she looks at it. She traces the blue line of a river with her index finger as she does, trying to focus. She was following a stream, and it was near the yellow area indicating a beach, so she and Kayo must be at the gray point representing the safe house.
The furthest point on the island, the cliff-top, is a good distance away. The safe house isn't too far from the halfway point on the island, but it'll still take a great deal of walking. And running. Definitely running.
But at least she knows where she is, now. She hands it back with a muttered "thanks", and Kayo tucks it back into the bag before they proceed to finish off the meal and pack their bags. It takes an awkward glance, but on a whim, Shuri takes half the condoms with the knife and Kayo takes the other half with the taser. She doesn't want to think of the possibility she'll need them, but just in case...
Once they're done and their stomachs are somewhat full, the dishes and bowl left are completely empty but clearly food-stained. Obviously, Shuri thinks, it'd be an unbelievably stupid risk to take the trouble to go outside to wash them, but she faintly recalls an episode where a girl tried to do just that. She doesn't remember the girl's name, since all the episodes blur together after a while of watching them in a marathon, but apparently the girl had been more bothered than she should've been about the idea of leaving dishes unwashed in her safe house and she'd gotten tackled and fucked into a gibbering mess in the water by three men. It'd been voted as one of the "stupidest moments" in the Virgin Game by viewers in a poll, to boot.
Now that they were done, however, they had...how much time left? It couldn't have been more than an hour, so there still had to be five hours left. Shuri sets the alarm clock to seven, briefly wondering how the hell she'll make her way around when it gets dark. There's a flashlight in her backpack, sure, but how long will the battery last?
There's also the question of the bed. It's big enough for two people, but no more, and it feels incredibly cramped when Kayo lies down directly next to her like peas in a pod. Shuri tries not to think about how awkward it is that she's lying next to someone, with the sides of their bodies pressed against each other, in a bed with sex toys on the nightstand.
Somehow, though, she hears Kayo's quiet breathing in sleep soon enough, and it doesn't take long for her to drift off as well.
