Go meet Professor Oak

You decide that it's best to get your Pokemon as soon as possible.

As you enter, a gust of cool air hits your face. You see the room inhabited by a few men (and at least one woman) in labcoats and some machines too complicated for any normal person to control. Further back, there is the professor standing and facing his granddaughter in a conversation. To the right there is a bookshelf and to the left a desk covered with two encyclopedia-like devices and Professor Oak's PC. In front of the bookshelf, there is a table with two Pokeballs atop it.

Next to the desk, you see Blue looking annoyed as you walk up to Professor Oak.

"Come on, Gramps! When are you gonna give me that new Pokemon you promised?"

"You will just have to wait until Red shows up."

"Uh...I have to wait forever...."

"Now Blue, every trainer needs to begin their journey with a Pokemon they can begin their adventure with! Both of you will grow on your quest to become a Pokemon champion. There are two Pokemon on the table, one for each of you."

You make your presence known by tapping on the Professor's shoulder, causing him to turn around and address you.

"Ah! There you are Red!" Blue looks over you with an annoyed look. "'Bout time you showed up, slowpoke."

Blue's response somewhat offends you. You and her were both good friends as kids and you used to have a crush on her (still do if you were being completely honest) but at some point when you were still little she seemed to have become something of a bitch to you for apparently no reason. Nothing that warranted her practically ignoring you or pretending that you didn't exist, save for the few times she didn't just to call you names or something that, to a little kid at least, was pretty heartbreaking to hear coming from the girl he liked.

"Now, the reason I called you both here today is because you are now of age to go on your very own adventures! To prepare you for the journey, I will let you both choose one of the Pokemon on that table over there."

"Finally! I can get my own Pokemon! Hurry up and choose yours Red. Clearly the one you want will be the weakest one!"

You ignore Blue this time and ask Professor Oak why there's only two Pokeballs, since you were often told that that Trainers usually picked from three starters. Oak gives a sigh before replying to your question.

"Unfortunately, I seem to have run out of the usual Pokemon. Normally, I have a Bulbasaur, a Squirtle, and a Charmander for new trainers to select from. They tend to be the best choices for a beginner, but this time I'm afraid you and Blue will have to make due between these two."
