Chapter 17 by Zingiber Zingiber

What's your next move?

Encounter the Nurse. On a 10+, take one forward.

Miss Wormwood is in charge of the infirmary. A lean, sinewy woman in a pristine white dress and apron with a nest of green snakes for hair, she quickly assesses the situation. She tut-tuts to see Fay in such a state, appraises you and Morgan, semi-dressed and disheveled, and takes charge of Fay.

After ascertaining that Fay is not coherently responsive, Miss Wormwood asks Morgan about the circumstances of Fay's discomposure.

"You'll need to report this to Minerval's Warden," Miss Wormwood said. "Or failing that, the Tutor." Her head of snakes stiffens outward, craning toward Morgan.

Morgan startles. "Yes, Miss Wormwood!" she says. She rises.

"I'll send word to your House," Miss Wormwood says. She walks Fay to a quiet back chamber.

You're left sitting in confusion. After a few brisk words as you entered, you were ignored. You're not even sure which way to go to House Leontes.

So you sit and wait for Miss Wormwood to return.

⚄⚄ + 2 = 12.

"Now, dear, she's resting comfortably," Miss Wormwood tells you. "You can go back now."

"I'm worried about Fay," you say. "I've hardly arrived, but this happens. I mean, this is my first day at Boarbristle."

"Oh, I see," Miss Wormwood says. "That's why you're not in your uniform. Have you not been to your House yet?"

"No, it was just the three of us on the ferry, myself, Morgan, and Fay, and I went to visit them first before going to find Leontes."

Miss Wormwood smiles. She says, "A pleasant welcome, I'm sure." Her smile fades. "With a regrettable outcome. It was bad practice for Fay to keep such a dangerous creature in her room, particularly leaving it unguarded between terms. But I understand Minerval is more liberal in its dormitory policies."

Her snakes sway about distractingly.

"What will happen to her?" you ask.

"Well, she might have been in rather a bad way if you hadn't convinced the imp to help remedy his sting," Miss Wormwood says. "Rather a good move on your part, I wouldn't have expected it of a first-year. Do you have demonology in your family?"

Family. DON'T talk about family, you remind yourself.

"I'm sure I don't know," you say. "The imp had stung Fay, and was flying about cackling, waving his sting, with his willy out..."

"As they do," Miss Wormwood says.

You say, "Yes, and I cast a charm on him and asked him to help. So he fed her his seed. What will happen to her?"

Miss Wormwood sighs. Her snakes droop. "We will know more by tomorrow. There is no single course for such an injury. Perhaps memory loss, perhaps obsession. It's best not to speculate."

Memory loss? She might not remember being with you?

"Now, now, don't cry, dear," Miss Wormwood says. Her snakes rise to half-staff. "Not to worry. She will get the best care."

"Please, could I...? Could you let me know as soon as you know something? I want to see her."

Miss Wormwood focuses her dark, liquid eyes on yours. Her snakes crane their necks toward you. "Ah...ah, child, I see," she says. "I see." Her eyes open very wide. For a moment, you catch a dancing phantom in her eyes, a knot of naked young women pleasuring each other. "So you want to be the first at her bedside?"
