Chapter 6 by Stalagg Stalagg

Good question, how are you going to find them?

Just follow your nose!

Your nose was your best bet in finding these Heroes. You were an Imp; a member of a race of beings which were entirely magical in their nature. Similar to fairies but not as gay, Imps could sense other sources of magic by proxy. Spells always left residue behind no matter how much mana the spell possessed or how skilled the caster was. Mana existed freely in the world and every time a spell caster utilized their Magic some of their mana was left behind.

Spells could hide someone from another's sight but very few were even aware of the mana trail they left behind. That they couldn't hide.

One good wiff of the air and you nearly went cross eyed from the scent that hit you. Whoever this Mage was they were unbelievably powerful. Made sense given they were capable of penetrating The Master's Vault and escaping into the Woods. No one could teleport rapidly however and if they were operating in a group then it was even more likely they were still in the Umbral Forest. Someone with that much power though wasn't to be trifled with though so you would have to tread carefully.

Giving a few flaps of your wings you moved above the tree line and continued to follow the trail. Mana residue didn't function like a traditional trail like a scent of track. It would be weeks before the residue was absorbed into the environment. This group could have lit a bonfire where they were and have chopped down every tree along their path and you couldn't have tracked them any more easily than you did now. It didn't matter that you couldn't see the Forest floor, you were hot on their trail and quick glance around you let you know none of The Master's minions had picked up their trail.

Good. This was your Quest, your chance for redemption, not theirs!

Finally you reached an area miles away from The Master's Tower but directly east from it instead of North. The ones sent to find these Heroes would have assumed they had taken the most direct route back to the Barrier and completely miss where they had actually gone! How clever of them, but not clever enough to avoid your keen senses! The Master's power flowed within you, you were well above them all really.

Descending down past the purple leaves you ceased flying to instead climb down the branches of the tree. You heard voices then talking to one another and you knew without a shadow of a doubt that your sense hadn't lead you astray.

Once on a low enough branch you peered into the camp below.

Find what you were looking for?
