Chapter 6

Brainvamp
...
You go to the landing stage to inspect the boats
An old fishing boat is grounded not far from the landing stage. Its paint is flaking on many spots. Two dark portholes on its side are like the eyes of a predator following your every move. You fasten the pace as his shadow hides you from the dim light of the stars.
The dark waves hit against the pillars of the pier under the stars with a soothing sound. You feel better already and despite your pain the small dingy moored to your right fills you with hope. The hull proudly bears the insignia of the Caron. Somebody from the boat has landed and soon you will be back onboard with a doctor looking at your injuries.
You feel relieved when your head starts spinning. The pain that seemed to have left you comes back in ****. You let out a small cry of pain as your vision blurs and you feel fainting. You pass out just for a few seconds. The terrible pain wakes you up when you hit the deck of the Caron’s dingy.
You scream once. All the air has left your lungs. You are submerged by an oppressing mist of suffering. Reaching for air and something to pull you out of your present position your hand falls on a sticky and soft mass by your side.
You look at your hand. It’s covered in a red liquid that looks a lot like blood. You scream again but this time not out of pain but out of terror as you look into the dead eyes of the corpse you share the bottom of the dingy with. Franticly you crawl out of the skiff into the hot water of the ocean.
You reach the beach a few yards away from the landing stage. You vomit bile and salt water and turn around to look at the stars. Soon the memory of the last night’s nightmare comes back to you: the deformed face of Esme, the blood of the man, the fear of the man. The reality slowly makes its way through your mind.
The veil of pain and rationality is shattered by your memories and the terrible realization that what made you fall yesterday was actually the sight of a vampire feeding on its victim.
A sound coming from the village brings you out of your reverie. The sand dunes around allow you to stay partially hidden from the newcomer. A large silhouette walks on the pier looking around. You can feel its hunger. You can see its dark eyes scanning the night looking for you. A second silhouette meets the first one.
“You heard it too?” the second silhouette asks.
“Yes,” the first silhouette answers.
“I can smell her but with the sea it’s hard to pinpoint a location. It’s funny it has your scent…”
“Yes I get it too. I was wondering where she went, I’m glad she’s still human I’d love to taste her. Come on Sam, stop hiding, you don’t know what you’re missing…”
You’re completely frozen; the first voice belongs to Debra, your sister, and the second one to Caroline your roommate.
