Chapter 17
What do you do next?
"It is time to pay respects to our fallen."
"Is the grave finished to the regulation six by six by four feet?" You ask, and the group you had working on it nods. "Then it is time to pay respects to our fallen." You declare, trusting to memory to tell you what steps must be followed after the digging of the grave, For which the first thing you remember is you need water, to anoint the body as it lies in the earth and speed the soul on it's way to the River Oceanus, which flows up to the gates of Heaven. You order everyone to form up in mixed teams of peasant and archer, with the 'spare' peasant, namely Crystal, going with you, and head down to the stream with the piece of leather taken out of the back of Keishara's own jerkin to carry the water that will send her on her way.
You encounter no creatures on your trek save a family of wild turkeys who startle in alarm and flee the area, and you collect the water, everyone also drinking from the spring to quench their thirst. You then march back to the barn and when you get to the fire pit tell everyone to start singing. The other four members of Keishara's unit take up a mournful dirge in elven and while the humans, yourself included, begin 'Amazing Grace', as you travel on to the graveside. With two of the elves taking hold of the puddle of water you have trapped in the small leather sheet the other two get down in the pit and Keishara's body is passed down to them, where they lay it on the bare dirt and small stones there, no 'modesty'* left to her, with her eviscerated stomach hanging open and the torn, cut up, and tattered jerkin exposing her ruby haired privates for all to see, and her once lovely emerald eyes starting to sink in their sockets as her corpse dries and her eyelids shrink open without coins to cover them. It is then you remember that you said that the deceased are to be given three small coins or other objects of low but not non-existent value in burial, two on the eyes as a fee for the angels who serve as ferrymen to carry those who cannot swim the fierce current across the River Oceanus and one in the mouth to remind them to come speak on behalf of those they left behind in the courts before Heaven's Gates and be a memento of home to remind them of how far they have come as they climb the heavenly mountain and shed their failings, flaws, foibles, falsehoods, sins, and sufferings towards their ultimate apotheosis into new Angels.
*(Though your new Faith gives short shrift to THAT concept, especially in ****, all persons come before the Courts of Judgement that stand before the Gates of Heaven truly naked, body, mind, and soul! There is nothing to hide their sins and transgressions there, every word, every action, good, bad, or indifferent, laid out before them relentlessly by the angel that serves as both prosecution and defense, since being perfected creatures of light, life, goodness, law, and order Angels not only will not but can not help the ungodly enter Heaven nor condemn those who kept the Faith to reincarnation in a lower form, or at least did the best that the could with the lives Atarah gave them.)
~Now how do I do this?~ You wonder and then snap your fingers. ~Right, this is what the tusks and tushes are for!~ You think and pull them from your pockets, handing them down to the elves in the pit and ordering them to put two on her eyes and the rest in to her mouth, the extras being things she can use as 'gifts' to souls that had to be buried without ceremony or by heathens who didn't give them proper **** rites so that they too can cross the river if their worthiness and strength of Faith is not enough to let them swim, her last chance to earn merit in the eyes of Atarah before judgement. (However there is a limit to this trick, only what can be fit INSIDE the body and on the eyes after **** and without damaging the corpse will cross over with you, so your family cannot cut open your stomach and fill you with coins in hopes of your getting into heaven, it is not ritual that ensures sanctity but living a just and righteous LIFE.)
The two climb out and you give the eulogy: "We are gathered here this evening to remember a life, brief as it was, well and thoroughly LIVED. Our comrade Keishara. in the space of a day, went from creation, to huntress, to soldier, to NCO, to the first Martyr of Atarah's Faith: always following orders, unafraid to lead from the front, and steadfast in her duty to God and Nation. She found the spring which has ensured our water supply, fired one of the arrows that helped me take down the giant boar that had claimed the spring for it's own, and her sacrifice bought us the time and fury we needed to kill the monster. It is therefore in her honor that I now Name this hamlet formerly of 11 souls, now tragically reduced to 10, Keishara Springs!" You take the a double handful of the water and throw it over the corpse. "From Heaven and the earth we arose, to Heaven and the earth we return! Let the last page of this lifetime for Keishara now be written." And one by one each of you take a handful of dirt and cast it over the corpse, then the three peasants who dug the grave, Rosalind, Maria, Georgette, start to fill it in with their hands, while the rest of you stay close by on alert for wolf or goblin, waiting till long after sunset.
Did that complete the quest?
